In this paper, I present an analysis of the notion of Ergativity in the dialects spoken in the

kinnaur region of himachal Pradesh. Till date, only standard kinnauri is known to the
researchers and no work has been reported on other varieties of dialects of kinnauri. Here I
analyse 2 different dialect of kinnauri and will compare the Ergativity pattern in them. The
dialects under study will be the dialect variety spoken by upper caste and the dialect spoken
by the lower caste. Upper caste dialect is placed in TB family and low caste dialect is placed
in IA family of languages.

Ergativity is a grammatical pattern wherein the subject of an intransitive clause is treated in

the same way as the object of a transitive clause, and differently from transitive subject.
(Dixon 1994: 1). Kinnauri exhibits Ergativity phenomenon like other TB and IA languages.
to analyse Ergativity pattern case marking and agreement type in these dialects will hv to be
studies.
