In 1778 the British had the strongest navy in the world. They laughed at the small navy
of America, who were fighting Britain for their independence.
One American captain, Captain John Paul Jones, decided to show the British that size
was not the most important thing. So, on the night of April 24th, 1778, he sailed his ship,
the Ranger, into the English port of Whitehaven. After he arrived, he took his men to a
bar. The bar was closed, so they broke the door and went in and had a drink.
While they were having a beer, the English police arrived. They thought the men were
drunken British sailors and arrested them. The next day, the police found their ship in
the port and realised that their prisoners were American sailors. They went to the
prison and spoke to the Captain. This is the conversation.

Policeman: Why did you come here?

Captain: To have a drink with my friends.
Policeman: What will you do if we allow you to leave?
Captain: We’ll sail back to America.
Policeman: Who is going to pay for the damage in the bar?
Captain: I’ll pay for it myself.
Policeman: Ok then. You can go!

So, the police released the sailors, the captain paid for the damage and the beer and
they went back to their ship. When they were leaving the port, they had an accident
and their ship sank. A tragic end for a silly joke.
