Culture

Culture is the learned, shared and transmitted knowledge of values, beliefs and lifeways of a particular
group that are transmitted intergenerationally and influence thinking, decisions and actions in patterns
or certain ways. (Leininger). It is the dynamic adaptation, a learned way of life that includes interrelated
attitudes, morals, beliefs, values, ideas, knowledge, symbols, artifacts, customs, traditions and norms of
a particular group that guide behavior, make life meaningful and transmitted internationally. (M. Sandra

Worldviews

This refers to the way individuals perceive the world, including the inherent nature of its inhabitants.

Particular Group

Cultural traditions are passed down from generation to generation within a particular group. The group
might be a tiny clan living in an isolated part of the world or a large collection of people in the United
States.

Race

Generally, this term refers to the anthropological usage. Anthropologically, race refers to physical
characteristics that a group of particular people share. These shared characteristics, initially due to a
common geography, include head shape, facial features, bone structure, hair texture and skin color.

According to the 2000 US Census form designators of race include:

- White
- Black American, African America or Negro
- American Indian or Alaska Native
- Asian or pacific islander
- Other (for other races)

Ethnicity

Ethnicity comes from the word ethnos, meaning nation or people, or a “sense of peoplehood”. (Clinton)
