Worksheet 4 Solutions

Math 112
Summer 2008

1. Solve the following and give the solution in number line and interval notation:

x + 1 x − 1
2 − 3 <1

Solution.
x+1 x−1
−1 < − <1
2 3
−6 <3x + 3 − 2x + 2 < 6
−6 <x + 5 < 6
−11 <x < 1
The answer is thus
(−11, 1)
on a number line it looks like the space in between -11 and 1 with both having open
circles.

2. Solve the following and give the solution in number line and interval notation:
2x x−1 1
+ ≤
x+5 x−5 5
Solution.
2x x−1 1
+ ≤
x+5 x−5 5
(x − 5)2x + (x − 1)(x + 5) 1

(x − 5)(x + 5) 5
2 2
2x − 10x + x + 4x − 5 1

(x + 5)(x − 5) 5
2
3x − 6x − 5 1

(x − 5)(x + 5) 5
15x2 − 30x − 25 x2 − 25
− ≤0
(x − 5)(x + 5) (x − 5)(x + 5)
14x2 − 30x
≤0
(x − 5)(x + 5)
2x(7x − 15)
≤0
(x − 5)(x + 5)
Then we must do a sign chart, which gives us that the answer is
(−5, 0], [15/7, 5)

3. Find the domain and range of the following:

2x − 7
y=
3x + 24
1
2

Solution. The domain is found by not letting the denominator be zero.

3x + 24 6= 0
3x 6= −24
x 6= −8
The range is found by first solving for x.
2x − 7
y=
3x + 24
3xy + 24y = 2x − 7
3xy − 2x = −24y − 7
x(3y − 2) = −24y − 7
−24y − 7
x=
3y − 2
and then finding the domain of this function
3y − 2 6= 0
3y 6= 2
y 6= −2/3

4. Sketch the graph of the following:

3
x
 −1 ≤ x < 0

y= x 0≤x<1
1

x 1≤x≤3
Solution. Done completely in class, and it is really hard to put graphs in.

5. Find the average rate of change on the interval [−1, 3] of the function
g(x) = 2x2 − 4x
Solution.
g(3) − g(−1) (2(3)2 − 4(3)) − (2(−1)2 − 4(−1))
=
3 − −1 4
(6) − (6)
=
4
=0
