ANTHROPOMETRIC METHODS AND PROCEDURES All anthropometric testing was done according to the procedures outlined by Blade, Ward,

Chan and Ross (Simon Fraser University, 1991). A complete listing of the test procedures is given in Appendix A. Several adaptations were made for use in this study and are listed below.

I. TRAINING OF ANTHROPOMETRISTS All anthropometric measures were taken by trained anthropometrists. Training sessions were conducted by two of the investigators (RAF;DD). Both investigators are "criterion anthropometrists". One major training session was conducted per year, and a review session was conducted immediately prior to each testing session. A minimum number of measurers were used; for example, almost all the data collected in the "Hospital" setting was done by only 4 measurers. The anthropometric testing procedures in the school (see below) necessitated the use of several measurers, however. Because of the formal anthropometric workshops, and close scrutiny of the data collection we are confident in the accuracy of the anthropometric data. Each subject had a complete set of anthropometric measurements taken including skinfolds, girths, breadths, lengths, heights and weights. The same measurer was used as often as possible throughout the course of testing. The same recorders were used each day. All measurements the same except for determination of mid-thigh (see landmarks on page 15 of the Simon Fraser manual). Front thigh skin fold is measured at the level of the mid thigh as determined with leg flexed at 90 degrees half way between the inguinal fold and anterior superior border of the patella. Tibial length and neck girth were additional measurements performed that are not currently in the Simon Fraser manual.
