Example Problems in Elementary Surveying

Example: Combined Tape Corrections A 30-m tape weighs 12 g/m and has a cross section of 0.020 cm2. It measures correctly when supported throughout under a tension of 8.5 kg and at a temperature of 20C. When used in the field, the tape is supported at its ends only, under a tension of 8.5 kg. The temperature is 13.5C. What is the distance between the 0- and 30-m marks under these conditions? Assume C = 0.0000116 /C and E = 2.10 x 106 kg/cm2. Given: NL = 30 m w = 12 g/m A = 0.020 cm2 Solution: Sag Correction Cs = w2L3 / 24P2 = (0.012)2(30)3/ 24(8.5)2 = 0.002 m (always shortens tape) Temperature Correction Ct = L (T T0) = 0.0000116(30)(13.5 20) = - 0.002 m (tape is shortened) Corrected length, L = L Cs Ct = 30 0.002 0.002 = 29.996 m ANS. Ps = 8.5 kg T0 = 20C T = 13.5C Pm = 8.5 kg
