Time Frame: 1 week Instructional Activity 1. Motivation Content of Activity The teacher will motivate the students by telling them they have the opportunity to get a class pet. Means of Presenting Activity y Tell students that at the end of this exploration they will get a class pet. y They will get to vote on whether they want to raise a frog or butterflies. y The teacher will explain that before they can get the class pet, they need to be very knowledgeable about it, so they know how to

take care of it.

2. Objectives

The teacher will inform students of the objective of the lesson.

3. Prerequisites

Students will read out of the textbook to learn about different groups of animals. Students will read out of the text book and participate in a webquest.

4. Information and examples

5. Practice and feedback

Students will participate in a webquest.

6. Testing

Students will create an online poster of either the butterfly life cycle or the frog life cycle using Glogster. These multimedia posters can incorporate text, graphics, video an audio. Students will take the Chapter 2 test.

The teacher will explain to students that they will be learning what butterflies and frogs are like when they are born, and how they change throughout their life. The teacher will explain that students will go on a webquest on the computer and then they will make an online poster using a program called Glogster. Students will learn about different types of animals in Chapter 2 Lesson 2 How are Animals Grouped? In this lesson students will learn about mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians. Students will read Chapter 2 Lesson 3 How Do Animals Grow and Change pages 44-49 in their science text book. Students will complete a webquest on the life cycles of butterflies and frogs. They will watch videos and hear stories that will explain the life cycles of butterflies and frogs to them. During the webquest students will practice putting the stages of the life cycles of the butterfly and frog in order. They will practice vocabulary with online flashcards. Students will also take online quizzes to get feedback about their learning. Students will create a Glog on Glogster EDU where they illustrate the life cycle of either the butterfly or the frog. (If students have not used Glogster before, the teacher will have to set up Glogster accounts for the students. Students will also have to be taught how to use Glogster. The teacher can do this for large group by projecting the computer image on the big screen in the computer lab. Students can follow along with the teacher as she shows them how to: sign in, change the background, insert text, graphics, video and sound). Students will take the Chapter 2 test from the Houghton Mifflin Science Curriculum, Grade 1 Edition.

7. Enrichment and Remediation

Students who perform well on the self-checks during the webquest may need enrichment. Students who seem to be having a hard time on the self-checks may need remediation.

Enrichment: The student could make an additional glog. So they could create two glogs, one on the life cycle of the butterfly and one on the life cycle of the frog. Remediation: Students who need help could work with a buddy on the webquest and on the glog creation. The teacher could create a modified webquest with less tasks for students with IEPs. The teacher can also check out books from the library to read with students for extra support.
