The grand lady of the Greek song describes how she was
transformed from a simple girl to the ultimate myth, displaying
her life along with the lives of two other women, each one of
whom has different experiences. Marinellas songs mark all their

great hits evolve through the text of Thanassis Papathanassiou

Sea will beat loudly in Syros Island at the 7th
International Festival of the Aegean, where

appear. Apollo Theater will come to life with

54th Venice Biennale

This year, two Greek artists will represent Greece at the 54th Venice Biennale with their works:
Diohandi and Stelios Faitakis. Diohandi will create her work on site in the Greek Pavilion, with a
Byzantine look, and water and light as dominant elements. Stelios Faitakis presents a mural called
Imposition Symphony, in six parts, which present a special story about the freedom of speech and
expression.

Gaidouronissi,

Gaidouronissi, or Chryssi, is just 8 miles

south of Ierapetra and many people
call it Small heaven on earth. It is a rare
sample of natural beauty, protected
by the European Natura 2000 program.
Its emerald beaches, covered by pink
shell chips, the beautiful cedar tree
forest and the uninhabited, virgin island
fascinate its visitors. The small boat from
Ierapetra docks at Vougiou Mati region,
and a path starts from there towards
the interior of the virgin island. If the
explorers get tired, they can rest
in the islands unique building.

Its a very popular picturesque resort, due to its

inhabitants warm hospitality and its Blue Flag

beach is the shallowest at Lasithi Prefecture, so

savor genuine Cretan cuisine flavors in the

The beach is 7 km east of Sitia, in a

quiet, perfect for relaxation region,
with a cave where ancient habitation
signs have been discovered. Farther

Keratokambos

Its name is probably due to the kerata

(carobs) stored in the area. It has a
broad beach, several kilometers long,
crystal clear waters and, in its western
part, satisfactory infrastructure, intense
activity and tourist development.
Its eastern coast is calm, perfect for
relaxation, with isolated dunes,
sand, and shallow waters.

Tsoutsouras

Coarse sand, blue waters, picturesque

taverns make this beach ideal for family
vacations. Its seawater has therapeutic
properties due to its high content of
salt and iodine. Built on the site of the
ancient city Inatos, Tsoutsouras has great
historic interest, since many ancient
objects of worship and technologically
advanced objects of the Minoan era
have been discovered here.

Rethymno, with three huge rocks

Folegandros, a conventional
Cycladic Island with a fairytale
Chora and minute settlements
facing the Aegean Sea, coolly
faced the unexpected tourist
tsunami, retained its picturesque,
hospitable profile, and refused

Chrysospilias antiquities

Human skeletons, broken vases

and a Roman water tank were
discovered in the natural monument
of Chrysospilia, on the islands
northeast side. This was a place
of worship, where coming-of-age
ceremonies were performed in the
4th century BC. It can be reached
only by sea, if the weather is good.

Amorgos has beautiful natural

landscapes, emerald beaches, a
picturesque Chora with cobbled
alleys and two-story mansions,
windmills, white churches, and a 13th
century Venetian castle.

Best swim: Stavros, the biggest

settlement, port and tourist life
center of the island, will be your base
from where you will set off to discover
beaches like Kedros, and Livadi with
its fine white sand.
Sightseeing: Small and
mountainous Donoussa is suitable
for trekking, in spite of its extensive
road network. Visit on foot Fokospilia,
a shelter for seals, the Cave of the
Wall, and try the Kedros - Messaria,
or Stavros - Kalotaritissa routes.
Other sights: Ruins of the geometric
periods settlements in Myti, Achtia,
and Vathi Limenari, and the old
quarries.

Heraklia:
The perfect
retreat

Heraklia has only two settlements,

joined by a 4 km-long asphalt-paved
road: Agios Georgios port, called
Kato Chorio by the locals, and
Panagia, or Chora, or Pano Chorio.
The island has 115 permanent
inhabitants.
Here, there are no banks, gas
stations, buses, or taxis; there is only
an ATM and a small van, so use
this opportunity for long walks and
relaxation.
Best swim: Swim at the sandy
beaches Livadi (with the small
Venetiko island very close
and Schinoussa Island in the
background), Vourkaria (you
will reach it after a one and a
half hour walk, an unforgettable
experience; on the way, explore
the famous Ai-Giannis Cave), Agios
Georgios, Vorini Spilia and Alimia.
If you prefer pebbled beaches, go
to Karvounolakos and Amoudi in
Merichas Bay, which is surrounded
by tall cliffs.
Must try: Meletinia (cheese pies
with mizithra cheese, eggs and
sugar) and pitaridia (a kind of
noodles). On August 15th, dont miss
the great fete of the Virgin Mary, with
free food offered by the church, or
by a local faithful.

In the past, they attracted

unconventional travelers, but today
Koufonisia are trendy and in August
they are full of visitors (from free
camping fans to socialites and yacht
owners).
They have everything: golden
sandy beaches, crystal clear waters,
good food (especially fresh fish) and
tranquility. You can walk, or rent a
bike.
Best swim: Exotic beaches: Finikas,
Fanos, Pori and Italida in the most
tourist Pano Koufonisi, also called
Chora. Behind Pori you will find Gala,
a closed beach with white pebbles
and foaming water. Visit Pisina a
stone tank with seawater. Caiques
leave from Chora every hour to the
most distant beaches, like Glaronisi,
frequented by nudists.
Best meals and fun: Eat fish at
Kapetan Nikolas, fresh squid at
Lefteris, or enjoy your drink at
Sorocos to the sound of good music!

Schinoussa:
The small island of the
Small Cyclades

Low hills, sandy beaches,

images reminding of the 50s, rural
landscapes, and two settlements
in addition to the port: Chora (or
Schinoussa), built at the islands
highest point, and small, picturesque
Messaria (visit the Evangelistria
church). The road network is
imperfect and dirt roads lead to
most of the beaches, so its better to

Every year, on five warm summer evenings,
the Skinakas Observatory, situated on Mount
Psiloritis plateau with the same name, opens
its doors to people who are not astronomers,
but the immense world, the star formations and
their dancing in the sky impress them. During
those five open days, Skinakas astronomers
explain the mysteries of the universe, answer
questions about our galaxys future, reveal the
secrets of the sky, and observe the heavenly
bodies with their guests.
Astronomers Makis Paleologou and Giannis
Papamastorakis set up an album with photos of
stars, nebulae, planets, star clusters and distant
galaxies, which they named A View to the
Universe (Me Thea to Sympan), aiming to offer
a complete presentation of all the heavenly
bodies, so that people could understand
the universe and see the objects of the
astrophysicists observations.
The heavenly bodies selected for that edition
have an aesthetic value too. The nebulae and
the supernova are multicolored, the clusters
and the galaxies have complex shapes,
whereas certain stars, billions of light years
far away, show, in the most enchanting way,
the eternal beauty of our world. But its not just
an album of pretty pictures, even though the
photos are spectacular; its creators mainly
wanted to explain whats happening
in the sky, clearly and simply.
Equally impressive with the album was its
preparation, which lasted one year. The
pictures are not simple. The depicted
heavenly bodies are so distant and dim
that the human eye cannot see them. The
astrophysicists used three different telescopes,
depending on the size of the object of their
observation, and a special, digital camera,
cooled at very low temperatures. Every picture
in the album is a composition made of dozens
of photographs of the same object, each one
of them taken in a different region of the color
spectrum; the composition was created in a
way compatible with the eyes ability to see
the object in its real color depiction.
Visitors of Skinakas Observatory have the
opportunity to see those spectacular pictures,
and the instruments by which they were taken.

At the same time, they are shown the various
areas of the observatory, its installations and
its dome, and they learn everything about
the operation and potential of its equipment
and telescopes. Skinakas astrophysicists talk
to them about scientific issues on which the
international research is focused, and their
importance for a better understanding of the
universe. Later on, they present videos that
explain the pictures and they talk about the
heavenly bodies and the natural processes
that occur in them, their creation and the
future of the universe.
The best part of the tour is when the guests
look through the telescope. The moon and
the planets seem to be closer, within reach,
and the best time to observe the heavenly
bodies is after the sunset. Thats why visitors go
up the rugged road to Skinakas Observatory
around 5:00 p.m. and they use the telescope
after 9:00 p.m. During those hours, their interest
rises continuously, as they understand better
whats happening in the sky. Besides, at an
altitude of 1,750 m., their distance from the
sky is already diminished and the closeness of
the heavenly bodies makes Astrophysics more
understandable than ever.
The Skinakas Observatory is open one Sunday
afternoon during each one of the summer
seasons five months. During the remaining
days, the scientists carry out their scientific
tasks in the excellent conditions for astronomic
observations provided by the Skinakas summit,
which make this observatory an ideal site
for astrophysical research. Also, courses are
offered to Greek and foreign astronomy
students, plus further education of Secondary
Education teachers, in which the Astrophysics
studies in Crete are presented, in association
with the Skinakas Observatory, for students who
wish to choose their studies major.
Several Greeks study Astronomy and excel
abroad; in fact, Astrophysics is a purely Greek
science. The weather, the clarity of the sky and
of the atmosphere in Crete help its progress. But
even those who will not become astrophysicists
can still go up on Mount Psiloritis on one of the
abovementioned five Sundays and admire the
evening sky, as they have never seen it before.

In the past, people used to say Damn the Cretan who

doesnt honor Crete, referring to those who renounced
the Cretan knife, whom they considered despicable.
The Cretan knife, timeless symbol of bravery and tradition,
decorative item of sentimental value, unrivalled element
of the Cretan costume, is unique in the world and it
maintains intact memories of the Cretans successive
struggles for freedom and their revolutions against various
oppressors, as well as age-old manners and customs.
Many mantinades (improvised rhyming couplets) and folk
songs of past centuries prove that this proud close-combat
weapon that decorates the belt of the traditional Cretan
costume is inextricably connected to the primeval tradition
of the Queen of the Mediterranean Sea.
A stroll among the knife making shops in Heraklio and
Chania provides a taste of knife making art. Fire, anvil,
steel, hammer, pliers and the knife makers art are the
essential elements that create the famous Cretan knife
since hundreds of years ago, the universal symbol of the
Cretans bravery and gallantry.
Here, we would like to give a glimpse in the nature and
history of the Cretan dagger and describe how its made,
before its traditional manufacture is lost eventually. Nikos
Vassilatos greatly assisted our research with his book To
Kritiko Macheri (The Cretan Dagger), which he says that it
resulted as follows: My initial goal was to write about Cape
Gramvoussa. Four times I tried to get across we used
caiques then and four times I failed due to the rough sea.
So, since I had some free time, I talked to the knife makers, I
learned all their secrets and, finally, I wrote this book!

A glance in history

Man tried to imitate the shape of the nails of wild animals

in order to create a tool that would protect him from the
beasts and would help him get his food. Thats how knives
were made originally!
In the Museum of Heraklio there is a statuette of a warrior
of the Minoan era from Sitia, armed with a knife that
resembles a lot the contemporary Cretan knives. Besides,
according to the ancient Greek mythology, close-combat
weapons and military helmets were invented in Crete by
the Kouretes, Zeus followers who covered the wailing of
the Olympian god when he was a baby by clanging their
swords on their shields, so that his father, god Cronus, who
wanted to kill him, fearing that when he grew up he was
going to overthrow him forcibly, would not hear him.
The history of the Cretan knife is lost in past centuries, as
the paths of the countries of the Mediterranean Basin are
entangled, making the recognition of its descent harder.
Even historians have not managed to clarify if the Cretan
knife is or isnt totally related and identical to the Turkish

knife. Until today, the prevalent view is that its related to

bichaq (knife in Turkish) and that its style must be sought
at the beginning of the islands Turkish occupation, in
1669. However, we find this knife not only in the Turkish
history, but also in the Balkan history, in tales, traditions,
manufacture of weapons (before its industrialization),
bloodstained armed conflicts, ships docking in many
ports, and on various travelers: merchants, seamen,
soldiers. The history of the Cretan knife, as we know it
today, is well hidden in the historical routes of people and
populations.
The Cretans enthusiastically adopted the knife with
the characteristic shape, which strongly resisted the
passage of time. Its emotional and practical military value
remained unchanged during the years, since the Cretan
knife became the essential accessory of the military kit
of Cretan men in the Macedonian Struggle, the Balkan
Wars, the Asia Minor Campaign, even during World War
II, when Cretan rebels were armed with their traditional
knife, symbol of Cretan bravery and of their islands spirit of
resistance against all conquerors.

A worldwide unique hilt

The Cretan knifes hilt is called manika. It has many

shapes, but three are the most widespread: the end of the
first is like a birds beak, the end of the second reminds of
seamens yataghans in the 18th and 19th centuries, and
the third, the classic Cretan hilt, is V-shaped. This V-shaped
hilt is the most common one and only Cretan knives have

it, thus typically they are unique, since knives with such a
hilt are not made anywhere else in the world. This peculiar
hilt is always made of animal matter, horn or bone, but in
the most expensive Cretan knives its made of ivory. The
white bone of many hilts mainly comes from bovine legs.
Even today, knife makers boil the bone with water, ash
and lime for five hours approximately, as they did two
hundred years ago, until it becomes bright white, and
then they polish it before they use it. More rarely, the knives
have dark colored hilts, made of horn.
Today, Cretes numerous herds of goats, sheep, or bulls
still offer abundantly the raw material for the knives horn
hilts, whereas more rarely we see hilts made of horns of
the islands wild goats, the well-known kri-kri. The sturdiest
and toughest horns are those of the ram and the male
goat. From the ram horns, those with golden grains
are the best, whereas the bulls horns are shinier and
brighter. Knives with dark colored horn hilts are called
mavromanika. Each bone or horn can be used to
produce only one hilt.

Highly artistic sheaths

The sheaths of silver-plated knives, the silver foukaria,

have a high aesthetic value; they are characteristic
samples of the Cretan silversmiths distinctive but perfect
artistic expression that is embossed on the cylindrical
surfaces of the knives silver sheaths. A skilled artisan
produces the sheath, or foukari, by engraving the
silver, which is filled with ceramic dust or tar, and folded;
on it various patterns are engraved (figures, dragons,
geometric forms, war symbols, images of battles, or
pictures of still life). At the edge of the sheath, there is
always the head of a snake or dragon, mounted by a
spiral piece of silver, called zeki. The chain which forms
the loop that holds the sheath is called kerkeli and the
artist twists it by hand; on it he mounts coins, small stones,
even small coral pieces.
Cretan artisans use oleander wood (in Crete its called
sfaka) for the wooden sheaths, which, according to the
tradition, must be cut during the period of the month
when the moon becomes smaller day by day, in order
to be durable. The wood is cut in two, carved internally,
and the two parts are glued; they are covered by thin
animal skin, usually goatskin, and sewn by a tough string or
copper wire.

Manners, customs and beliefs

required that the groom should offer to his fiance a small
silver dagger, the argyrobounialaki, among his other
presents, which the young women placed at their waist,
like the men, to indicate their commitment; thus, no other
man could approach them! In addition, it was a reminder
to the woman that if she were unfaithful, she would die.
Finally, the dagger had a practical value, since the young
Cretan girl could defend herself and her honor with it, if
she was in danger.
In the past, Cretan customs demanded the placement
of a small mavromaniko dagger in the brides shoe, to
guarantee the success and solid founding of the new
family, and to repel the spells of those who envied her
luck. In fact, after the wedding ceremony, the couple
should engrave a cross on the houses doorstep by the
mavromaniko dagger, to drive the evil spirits away from
their home.
In some regions of Crete, when a boy was christened,
the godfather used to offer him a Cretan knife and a gold

coin. Tiny mavromanika daggers were used to make

amulets that protected the children from the demons.
Also, when a woman lost a child, she used to hang a small
mavromaniko dagger to protect her other children from
death!
The Cretan dagger always the mavromaniko was
even used in magic rites. In their effort to master the forces
of nature, to go beyond its laws and to control human lives
through demons, the magicians used to trace a circle on
the ground by a mavromaniko dagger, and fix it at its
center. This practice of the islands magicians was called
daveti and it occurred in meetings of witchcraft with
demons.
Folklorist Nikolaos Politis characteristically describes the
tracing of the circle on the ground by a mavromaniko
dagger for a magic purpose, in Crete, referring to the
instruction of a lyre player by fairies in order to play his lyre
skillfully: The lyre player who wants to learn to play the
lyre well, goes to a deserted junction at midnight, traces a
circle on the ground by a mavromaniko dagger, then he
sits inside the circle and he plays. After a while, the fairies
come and move around him; they are mischievous, they
want to punish him, but since they cannot enter the circle,
they try to seduce him and pull him out of it. They speak
to him tenderly, they sing beautiful songs and they make
innumerable tricks, but he must continue to play his lyre
coolly, if he is clever, and not go out of the circle. They ask
him to get out of the circle in order to teach him to play
the lyre better, but he doesnt respond. Then, they ask him
to give them his lyre. The lyre player gives his lyre carefully,
keeping his hand and every part of his body in the circle,
otherwise they will cut it, or they will drive him mad. A fairy
begins to play the lyre beautifully, then she returns the lyre

to the lyre player, hoping to convince him to go out of the

circle so that they can harm him.
Politis says that the transfer of the lyre from the player to
the fairies and vice versa, without anyone of them crossing
the boundary of the circle, goes on all night long, until
they hear the first cock. Then, the fairies ask the lyre player
to give them something personal in order to teach him to
play the lyre like them. Usually, he gives them one of his
nails and they teach him to play very skillfully, and finally
they disappear at the break of dawn. Thats why, in the
past, if a lyre player played especially skillfully, he used to
say: What do you think? I learned to play at the junction.

Cretan knife artisan

I found myself at the knife making shops purely by

luck says Stavros Paterakis, one of the few artisans of
traditional Cretan knives in Chania. If you dont love this
job, you cant do it confesses
the 49-year old craftsman. He
remembers being surrounded by
Cretan knives since he was small.
My father had a coffee shop
in the knife making area, and
somehow I became involved in
their manufacture since I was 8
years old until my military service
at 22. Afterwards, I worked as a
construction worker, but I was

injured and I returned to the knife making area. It was my

fate! he jokes, and he explains that in order to make a
Cretan knife, one must use all the arts. The Cretan knife
needs painting, sculpture and a lot of perseverance! Its
not as simple as it looks. It needs concentration and, most
of all, you must love this task.
Mr. Paterakis sadly ascertains that the original form of the
Cretan knife has been altered with the passage of time.
The Cretan knife has been commercialized so much that
its almost forgotten. Even here, in Crete, there are people
who dont know its existence!. And he explains: Genuine
Cretan knives dont have mantinades on them, like the
souvenirs that you see in the shops. On traditional knives
there are engraved patterns, like two dragons facing
each other, which prevent evil, or the cypress tree, that
is considered a symbol of longevity! Thats the genuine
knife!.
Has the financial crisis affected the Cretan knife? Its
true that people dont have
money to spend on luxuries, like
Cretan knives. This year, I didnt
get any orders from knife making
shops. Even in the past, the
prosperous people mainly wanted
to own a Cretan knife! Stavros
Paterakis says. and he adds: My
16-year old son learns my art and
I hope that he will continue the
tradition that I teach him
