Side Effect/Adverse Reaction CNS: fatigue, weakness, dizziness, depression, insomnia, memory loss, mental stats changes, nightmares, anxiety, nervousness, drowsiness. EENT: blurred vision, stuffy nose. Resp: bronchospasm, wheezing. CV: bradycardia, congestive heart failure, pulmonary edema, peripheral vasoconstriction ,hypotension. GI: constipation, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, liver function abnormalities.

Nursing Consideration _Check apical pulse before giving drug; if slower than 60 beats/minute, withhold drug and call prescriber. _Monitor patient's blood pressure. _Monitor hemodialysis patients closely because of hypotension risk. _Beta blockers may mask tachycardia caused by hyperthyroidism. In patients with suspected thyrotoxicosis, withdraw beta blocker gradually to avoid thyroid storm. _Drug may mask signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia in diabetic patients. _Drug may cause changes in exercise

Patient Teachings _Instruct patient to take drug exactly as prescribed, at the same time every day. _Caution patient not to stop drug suddenly, but to notify prescriber if unpleasant adverse reactions occur. _Teach patient how to take his pulse. Tell him to withhold drug and call prescriber if pulse rate is below 60 beats/minute. _Tell woman of childbearing age to notify prescriber about planned, suspected, or known pregnancy. Drug will need to be stopped.

Block stimulation of beta1 (myo cardial) adrenergic receptors. Do not usually affect beta2 (pulm onary, vascular, uterine) receptor sites. Therapeutic Effects: decreased blood pressure and heart rate, decreased frequency of attacks of angina pectoris, slowing of ventricular response

GU: impotence, decreased libido, urinary frequency. Derm: rashes Endo: hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia MS: joint pain, back pain, arthralgia

tolerance and ECG. _Alert: Withdraw drug gradually over 2 weeks to avoid serious adverse reactions. _Don't confuse atenolol with timolol or albuterol.

_Advise breastfeeding mother to contact prescriber; drug isn't recommended for breast-feeding women.
