IPSAFSA CHRISTMAS PARTY 2009 OPENING PARALITURGY

Introduction Joy to the world our Saviour comes Not in power, not in might but in the tenderness of love He comes as the promise of life hidden in a mothers womb This is the time we believe once more that perfect love casts out fear That generosity transforms scarcity into abundance That righteousness overcomes oppression with justice This is the time we are assured That Gods light has come into the world And the darkness will never overcome it.
Opening Song: O Come All Ye Faithful O Come All Ye Faithful Joyful and triumphant, O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem. Come and behold Him, Born the King of Angels; O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord. O Sing, choirs of angels, Sing in exultation, Sing all that hear in heaven God's holy word. Give to our Father glory in the Highest; O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord. Opening Prayer Luke 2:15-20 (New International Version) When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about." So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. 17When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.

Communal Prayer Lord this is my prayer Not only on Christmas day But until I see you face to face May I live my life this way; Just like the baby Jesus I ever hope to be Resting in Your loving arms Trusting in your sovereignty. And like the growing Christ child In wisdom daily learning May I ever seek to know You With my mind and spirit yearning. Like the son so faithful Let me follow in Your light, Meek and bold, humble and strong Not afraid to face the night Nor cowardly to suffer And stand for truth alone Knowing that Your kingdom Awaits my going home. Not afraid to sacrifice Though great maybe the cost Mindful how you rescued me From broken hearted loss. Like my risen Savior The babe, the child, the Son May my life forever speak Of who You are and what Youve done. So while this world rejoices And celebrates Your birth, I treasure You the greatest gift Unequaled in Your worth. I long to hear the same words That welcomed home Your Son, Come good and faithful servant, Your Master says, Well done.

And may heaven welcome others Who will join with me in praise Because I lived for Jesus Christ Not only on Christmas Day. Closing Prayer Closing Song : JOY TO THE WORLD Joy to the World , the Lord is come! Let earth receive her King; Let every heart prepare Him room, And Heaven and nature sing, And Heaven and nature sing, And Heaven, and Heaven, and nature sing. Joy to the World, the Savior reigns! Let men their songs employ; While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat, repeat, the sounding joy. No more let sins and sorrows grow, Nor thorns infest the ground; He comes to make His blessings flow Far as the curse is found, Far as the curse is found, Far as, far as, the curse is found. He rules the world with truth and grace, And makes the nations prove The glories of His righteousness, And wonders of His love, And wonders of His love, And wonders, wonders, of His love.

V. READING COMPREHENSION Nuclear Weapons It is generally well known that in a number of particularly dangerous parts of the world, for example the Middle East and the India/Pakistan border region, there are countries which either possess, or have the technology to produce, nuclear weapons. It is also worth remembering, however, that the country which possesses more nuclear weapons than any other, the United States, is the only power ever to have used nuclear weapons against people. Nuclear weapons were first developed in the United States during the Second World War, to be used against Germany. However, by the time the first bombs were ready for use, the war with Germany had ended and, as a result, the decision was made to use the weapons against Japan instead. Hiroshima and Nagasaki have suffered the consequences of this decision to the present day. The real reasons why bombs were dropped on two heavily-populated cities are not altogether clear. A number of people in 1944 and early 1945 argued that the use of nuclear weapons would be unnecessary, since American Intelligence was aware that some of the most powerful and influential people in Japan had already realized that the war was lost, and wanted to negotiate a Japanese surrender. It was also argued that, since Japan has few natural resources, a blockade by the American navy would force it to surrender within a few weeks, and the use of nuclear weapons would thus prove unnecessary. If a demonstration of force was required to end the war, a bomb could be dropped over an unpopulated area like a desert, in front of Japanese observers, or over an area of low population inside Japan, such as a forest. Opting for this course of action might minimize the loss of further lives on all sides, while the power of nuclear weapons would still be adequately demonstrated. All of these arguments were rejected, however, and the general consensus was that the quickest way to end the fighting would be to use nuclear weapons against centres of population inside Japan. In fact, two of the more likely reasons why this decision was reached seem quite shocking to us now. Since the beginning of the Second World War both Germany and Japan had adopted a policy of genocide (i.e. killing as many people as possible, including civilians). Later on, even the US and Britain had used the strategy of fire bombing cities (Dresden and Tokyo, for example) in order to kill, injure and intimidate as many civilians as possible. Certainly, the general public in the West had become used to hearing about the deaths of large numbers of people, so the deaths of another few thousand Japanese, who were the enemy in any case, would not seem particularly unacceptable - a bit of 'justifiable' revenge for the Allies' own losses, perhaps. The second reason is not much easier to comprehend. Some of the leading scientists in the world had collaborated to develop nuclear weapons, and this development had resulted in a number of major

advances in technology and scientific knowledge. As a result, a lot of normal, intelligent people wanted to see nuclear weapons used; they wanted to see just how destructive this new invention could be. It no doubt turned out to be even more 'effective' than they had imagined.
