HIV/AIDS can shatter the lives of children and the lives of their communities.

Some children and teenagers enter prostitution after their parents fall sick or die from AIDS, as they need to take care of their family and cannot find suitable employment. It is easier to manipulate a child involved in prostitution into unprotected sex than it is to persuade an adult sex worker. (mentioned by several exploiters in Togo)

Adult sex workers interviewed in Zambia noted that younger girls are at greater risk of contracting HIV because they do not know how to use condoms or how to handle clients who refuse to wear condoms.
