philippe ramette
Philippe Ramette was born in 1961. He lives and works in Paris.

Since the early 1990s, Ramette has been creating objects that are designed for a specific use that is spelled out in their title, for example, object for isolating yourself, for moving mountains, for levitating, for seeing yourself looking, for traveling in time, for getting yourself struck by lightning, for handling the void, for measuring how far youve come... Be it armchairs, artificial limbs or gallows, these instruments from another age attract more than our simple contemplation. Generally, says Ramette, its not the object thats important, its the idea of a possible future use and especially what that use is going to entail in terms of transformations. Whether its his Bote isolement (Isolation Box), a wooden case for enclosing your head, or his Objet voir le chemin parcouru (Object for Seeing the Distance Youve Come), a wooden base to be attached to the skull and sporting side mirrors enabling the wearer to see where he or she is coming from, it is indeed the uses these objects lead us to imagine, the scenarios they turn out, that interest the artist most. Prostheses for body and soul, the objects and situations dreamed up by Ramette are designed to improve in a playful way our moral and spiritual existence and to free us from the limits imposed by our condition as humans, such as moving through the heavens or the depths of the sea in complete liberty, although there is a price to be paid just the same, a physical effort or a mortification of the body. Along with his mentally activated sculpture-objects, Ramette produces images in which he poses himself in situations for which his objects were originally created.

Ramettean Man Philippe Ramette has always appeared to me as a kind of flying saucer in the contested landscape of contemporary art. Just consider the generation of artists who began to show their work in the nineties: his remove is evident, both in terms of formal resources and in the nature of his universe. I clearly recall my first conversations (in 1986 at Villa Arson, at the time when I was director) with the odd, "cut-out" image of this slim, fragile, discreet, timid young man, often searching for his words, at times as translucent as his clear blue eyes, as elegantly selfeffacing as his vaguely outdated suits a kind of Keatonian dandy, as evanescent as his smile which was imbued with a sad humor like Jules Laforgue, as photogenic as a solitary figure by Sanders or one of Truffaut's adolescents, as simultaneously close and distant as one of those absolute bachelors that the nineteenth-century novel, as well as Duchamp and Kafka, made into emblematic figures of modernity. A student still so much the same today that the calendar seems to have no grasp over him: he always appears to have just emerged from a parallel corridor of time. I recall his early bricolo-mystical pieces, in which he said goodbye to his vain attempts at painting: La Mobylette crucifie [Crucified Moped], the Rcepteur dmanations divines [Receptacle of Divine Emanations] a watering can that he made into a hat and Les Cendres de Dieu [God's Ashes], an old radio, restyled in varnished wood, where you could glimpse the dimly lit cinders of his final canvas... And I recall my total perplexity before these strange objects, along with my immediate conviction that here was a singularity, an exception, a new definitive dreamer who would have to be carefully and patiently accompanied along his path. I also remember, for example, Espace culpabilit [Guilt Space] which we exhibited in 1990 in the garden of Villa Arson: it invited the innocent visitor to go to the corner and take up the old posture of school-time penance, in a comical displacement of the weighty questions of art to the natural environment or the public space. If I recall the majority of Philippe Ramette's works so well, it is

because they emerge from the very language and tonality of remembrance, because they seem to hail from a diffusely shared memory, from a bygone but familiar time, from an undefinable but perhaps infra-thin distance, involving something like a neglected share of our own past. Their materials, their artisanal mode of production and the patina that seems to cloak them, all combine to keep them at a distance from the freshness of the new, the flagrancy of the present to keep them in the withdrawn presence of the untimely. One should see here, I believe, no less humor than melancholy, no less restlessness than geometrical precision. There is in Philippe Ramette's work an implacable use of nominalist logic, a cutting sense of the proof particularly by the absurd in the service of a wily propensity for the tactics of self-derision. Thus he is naturally the first to use and profit from his instruments, accessories and other prosthetics. Man in Ramette's version makes us think of the illustrations of classical iconology: he always appears in full regalia, equipped with attributes that symbolize his history or destiny. Ramettean Man is moral, he knows himself to be weak and mortal, his is well aware of the common illusions and attempts to correct some of his inborn defects. Thus he can rise to his feet or bow to his knees, depending on whether he wants to mark his dignity or humility. He carries his own prison with him and has a domestic gallows. He can isolate himself by enclosing his head in a box ad hoc, he also knows how to manipulate the void, how to see the world in detail and look back on the paths he has crossed. He reflects, perched up on stilts. He is even able to see himself seeing, and if he wants to travel in time or to be struck by lightning, he does so without leaving his chair. This detached pessimist is neither a hero nor a prophet, neither a victim nor an executioner, he is modest and pragmatic: pure action is his trivial truth, his symbolic therapy, his improbable catharsis the incredulous form of his faith. Thus Philippe Ramette should be recognized as an inventor for the public good, an ergonomic pataphysician. A nephew of Panamarenko, a second cousin of Slominski, he deals in objects owing almost nothing to the codes that currently hold sway in the field of contemporary art. Their often deceptual operations take us on droll and grating excursion through those mirrors called naivet, tragedy and ridicule.
