Script for My Mother in Two Photographs, Among Other Things, by Aleida Rodriguez Bard Queens, W&T Fall 2011

KJB Length: 45-75 minutes (depending on extensions) 1. Read silently to self (5-10 min) 2. Read around, each person taking a paragraph. Underline anything of interest and share. Which paragraphs are supposed to be the pictures? (10-15 min) 3. FFW: How do these vignettes combine to create a portrait (or picture?) of the mother? What type of person is she? (5 min) 4. FFW: Choose a paragraph and write two or three sentences that can be added to the end of it. These sentences can either stay extend the scene or they can provide back story. They should be in keeping with the tone and story arc of the overall piece. (5-10 min) 5. Read around again and do a sort of text explosion, with students adding their sentences to the end of each paragraph (15 min) 6. Possibility 1 (in class or as homework): Hand out found photos from www.timetales.com (I have included some samples on the following pages). Have each person write a vignette in the style of Rodriguezs piece to go with their photo. Possibility 2 (as homework): Have each person use a photo from their home to do the same. This vignette can be real or imagined.
