The book The story begins in New York City in 1930, during the great economical depression. Angela was a young pretty Irish girl that lives in New York, she was really poor but she has a great heart, during a party she met Malachy McCourt and during that party she got pregnant. But Angela didnt know that Malachy have problems with alcohol and perhaps of that Angela and Malachy got married. During the first part of the story we can notice that the couple have three children, the first one was Francis or Frank, the second one was Malachy Junior and the last one was a girl called Margaret. But we can notice that Margaret died when she was a little baby, because the family cant gave to her the medicines that she need. Malachy always got the problem that was very difficult to him to get a job, because he was always drinking, and thats the reason why the family never got the enough money to eat or for medicines. Later, the kids went to the school, but they had problems there, because they didnt have the materials like books or shoes. Also they have the problems that they went to a catholic school, and the priests were very hard with them. After that the couple gave to birth two more babies, Oliver and Eugene, but like the first time with Margaret they got sick because they cant bought the medicine and they died soon. The family even got problems, to live in a comfortable place, they even had to use the wood from some of the walls to get some fire, because they lived in a very cold place. Frank was a very problematic boy, because he cheats his mother and lied to her, also Angela took him to an Irish Dancing Lessons but he used to leave the class and went to other places. When Franck became a teenager, the family still got problems with money, and thats the reason why Franck had to steal to get some food for the family. At least, Franck gets a real job as a Telegram Boy. Then Franck helped Mrs. Finucane to recover some money of the debtors of Mrs. Finucane, and she gave to him a part of that money, with that part he moved to New York and begins a new life.
