Maslows Hierarchy of Needs

Meeting your needs


List 3-4 things that you need or that you perceive that you need to be a successful athlete. List 3-4 things that you want from your athletic experience. How do you meet your needs and wants as an athlete?

Abraham Maslow

Established in the late 1950s and Early 1960s Established the theory that human being are motivated by unsatisfied needs and that certain lower needs need to be satisfied before higher needs can be satisfied People are basically trustworthy, self protecting, and self governing. Violence is not part of human nature. People become violent because they are deprived of lower needs that need to be satisfied. 2 types of needs: Deficiency needs Growth needs

These feeling motivate us to alleviated them as soon as possible

Safety needs
Establishing stability and consistency in a chaotic world These are mostly psychological in nature

Security

of a home Need for law and order Often motive people to become religious

Many people never get past these needs

Social Needs
The desire to belong We want to be needed We want to be accepted We need to feel loved by others

Esteem Needs

Two types
Competency Attention

and recognition

Admiration has to do with the need for power Self-Concept comes into play

The Growth need The Army says it best Now that people have everything met they can maximize their potential
