Andrea Bocelli's Biography Bocelli was born in 1958, in Lajatico, rural Tuscany. The traditions of the regi on, and the strong influence of his parents who taught their son never to simply accept defeat, rather to draw strength from it, have left indelible impressions on the man. Andrea does not remember life without passion for music. He recalls his early fa scination with the great Italian tenors, such talents as Del Monaco, Gigli and e specially his idol Franco Corelli. Enflamed by the music of the opera, Andrea's lifelong dream and ambition was to become a great tenor. The gentle teasing by c ontemporaries, of Andrea's love for this seemingly antiquated music, never preve nted them from pleading for performances. Approaching his teens, Andrea won a nu mber of singing competitions. However as adult life approached, youthful ideals of a life devoted to music were to be undermined by doubt and reality. Andrea travelled to Pisa to attend university, taking a degree in Law. Throughou t, he enjoyed playing in local piano bars, performing the classic tunes of such vocal greats as Sinatra,Aznavour and Piaf. Occasionally, Andrea's deepest musica l passions were revealed with the performance of a favourite aria. Learning that childhood idol Franco Corelli was to take master classes in Turin, Andrea apprehensively approached the maestro. Corelli, recognising a natural be auty in the voice which recalled qualities of several legendary Tuscan tenors, t ook on the young man as a pupil. Encouraged, Andrea considered that, with dedica tion, a life of music might prevail. The legal career was suspended. Life was no w to study music by day and perform in piano bars by night. Pisa's law courts we re not to see the return of the young lawyer. In 1992, Italian rock star Zucchero required a tenor to assist in the preparatio n of a demo of a unique duet, "Miserere", to be sung with the great Luciano Pava rotti. After fruitless auditions, a young man performing in local piano bars app eared. Effortlessly, and somewhat inexplicably, the young man captured the very essence of the song. Italian music industry figure Michele Torpedine flew to Philadelphia to play "Mi serere" to Pavarotti. The great maestro was stunned by the way the tenor took to the song. A friendly impasse was reached, with the maestro steadfastly rejectin g Michele Torpedine's assertions that the voice was of an unknown piano bar pian ist, rather than a talented young tenor. Back in Italy, Andrea was approached in 1993 by Caterina Caselli Sugar, presiden t of Sugar label, one of the country's longest established music companies, when she heard him singing "Nessum Dorma" at private party. Caterina was immediately touched by Andrea's voice. Determined that Andrea should take this unique talen t to the public, Caterina invited Andrea to visit her office, to hear an unpubli shed composition entitled "Il Mare Calmo Della Sera". Andrea attended Sugar with his father Alessandro, where Caterina played the music, suggesting that the son g must be recorded by this voice of power and beauty. With such a unique voice to introduce, Caterina, Michele and others worked to ha ve Andrea invited to take part in the annual "San Remo Song Festival", given tha t the event demands almost universal attention from the Italian media and public . This idea was to win through, as Andrea won the preliminary contest with the h ighest score ever, progressing to then win the "New Acts" competition in 1994. C hart success was immediate. Andrea's debut album on Sugar label, Il Mare Calmo D ella Sera and it's follow up Bocelli soon began to attract the attention of Euro pe. In 1996, the melody of Con Te Partir (written by Francesco Sartori and Lucio Quar antotto) and in it's duet arrangement with Sarah Brightman, "Time To Say Goodbye ", beguiled the European public. Hinting at the beginning of an international An drea Bocelli phenomenon, "Time To Say Goodbye" spent fourteen weeks atop the Ger man single chart, to become the nation's best selling single of all time.

1996's debut international album Romanza, enchanted first Europe, then beyond. T he passion of Romanza inflamed the world, Andrea's voice touching hearts unfamil iar with words of Italian, but utterly fluent in the language of emotion. Romanz a became established as a fixture on international hit parades, as the songs bec ame ensconced in the emotional landscape of their listener's lives. Alongside his career in popular music, Andrea has pursued his operatic passions with stunning success. With 1995's Sugar classical debut, "Viaggio Italiano", An drea paid his personal tribute to the musical tradition of the Italian tenor, no t just the greats who inspired him, but to the Italian immigrants and local hero es who celebrated and popularised opera in their adopted homelands. 1998 debut i nternational classical disc, "Aria", became one of the most successful classical albums ever, dominating classical charts and sensationally scaling internationa l pop album charts. Andrea's lifetime's passion to share his love of opera with a wider audience, es pecially those for whom opera would be an exciting new experience, had reached a point where not even his wildest dreams had dared to stray. With even his wildest dreams materialising, what then are the simple realities o f the man? Andrea is a man of passions, with an unquenchable lust for life and a thirst for all manner of insight and experience. One striking example of this t enacious attitude to life was illustrated when Andrea paid a visit to his local airfield, eliciting a playful invitation from a member of the resident parachuti ng club. With no prior engagements for the remainder of the afternoon, one of th e world's foremost tenors shortly found himself experiencing a spectacular freef all of several thousand feet! Back on solid ground, avid passions for music, lit erature (especially that of Russian and French writers) and sport are pursued. R elaxation in the company of friends is often accompanied by simple Tuscan fare, when the man himself may commandeer the family kitchen to create another type of Italian masterpiece! Despite living in a world of frenetic change, Andrea approaches life with a sere ne outlook, enjoying life's simple pleasures and undertaking each challenge with a passion. Ever optimistic, Andrea has perfectly understood the essence of a qu ote by French novelist Antoine de Saint-Exupery; "One only sees clearly through the heart. E' senza dubbio la voce italiana pi amata del momento, soprattutto a livello inte rnazionale dove la gente fa a gara per comprare i suoi dischi e dove tutti appre zzano, come lui stesso ammette, i prodotti veramente e genuinamente italiani. E cosa c' di pi italiano di una voce coltivata nel melodramma e prestata, occasional mente, alla musica leggera? Nato il 22 settembre 1958, Andrea Bocelli cresciuto nella fattoria di famiglia a Lajatico, nella campagna toscana. A sei anni gi alle prese con il difficile stud io del pianoforte, su cui le sue piccole mani scorrono comunque volentieri e con scioltezza. Non contento, si mette anche a suonare flauto e sassofono, alla ric erca di un'espressione sempre pi profonda della musica. Il piccolo Andrea ancora non sospettava che questa espressione sarebbe poi venut a dalla voce, lo strumento in assoluto pi intimo e personale.

Quando inizia a cantare il suo "appeal" percepibile da subito, e basterebbero i racconti dei parenti, rapiti di fronte alle sue estemporanee, ma presto richiest issime in famiglia, esecuzioni. Finito il liceo, si iscrive a giurisprudenza all'Universit di Pisa dove si laurea , sempre attento per a non dimenticare gli studi di canto. Anzi, talmente serio i l suo impegno che finisce per prendere lezioni da un mostro sacro del Novecento, quel Franco Corelli che l'idolo tenorile di molti amanti dell'Opera. Tuttavia v

ivere di musica al giorno d'oggi quasi impossibile e Bocelli non disdegna di cim entarsi talvolta anche nel pi prosaico piano-bar. E' in questo periodo che incontra Enrica, che diventer sua moglie e che gli dar du e figli: Amos e Matteo. La storia d'amore tra i due purtroppo sembra si sia conc lusa da poco e sono diventate ormai note le dichiarazioni del cantante circa il problema del divorzio e i suoi figli. Tornando alla musica, l'inizio "ufficiale" della sua carriera di cantante casual e. Si fa avanti per un'audizione che il gi celebre Zucchero tiene nel 1992 per re alizzare un provino di "Miserere", pensata per Luciano Pavarotti e da realizzare proprio con il fantastico tenore modenese. E qui accade il "coup de teatre". Pa varotti, infatti, ascoltando la registrazione, commenter: "Grazie per la splendid a canzone, ma lascia che sia Andrea a cantarla. Nessuno pi adatto di lui." Luciano Pavarotti, com' noto, in seguito registrer comunque la canzone, ma nella t ourne europea di Zucchero, sar proprio Andrea Bocelli a sostituirlo sul palco. Poc o dopo, nel 1993, inizia anche la carriera discografica, suggellata da un contra tto con Caterina Caselli, proprietaria della "Sugar". La Caselli punta molto su di lui e per farlo conoscere ad un pubblico pi vasto lo iscrive al Festival di Sa nremo dove supera le eliminatorie cantando "Miserere" e poi stravince nella cate goria Nuove Proposte. Nel 1994 dunque invitato a partecipare al Festival di Sanremo tra i Big con "Il mare calmo della sera", e si aggiudica un punteggio record. Il suo primo album ( che porta il titolo della canzone) la conferma di una popolarit in rapida crescit a: in poche settimane ottiene il primo disco di platino. Torna a Sanremo l'anno successivo con "Con te partir", che viene inserita nell'album "Bocelli" e che in Italia ottiene un doppio disco di platino. Nello stesso anno, durante una tourne europea ("Night of the Proms"), alla quale partecipano Bryan Ferry, Al Jarreau ed altri grandi, Bocelli canta davanti a 500 .000 persone e a decine di milioni di telespettatori. Il successo planetario immediato. I singoli "Con te partir" (e la versione ingles e "Time to say goodbye") superano record di vendite in molti paesi, mentre gli a lbum si aggiudicano premi in tutta Europa. In Francia il singolo rimarr in testa alle classifiche per sei settimane, aggiudi candosi tre dischi d'oro; in Belgio sar numero uno per 12 settimane: il pi grande successo di tutti i tempi. L'album "Bocelli" poi otterr qualcosa come quattro dis chi di platino in Germania (per quasi 2 milioni di copie vendute), quattro nei P aesi Bassi e due in Italia. Sar tuttavia l'album successivo, "Romanza", a raggiungere nel 1996 vertici di suc cesso internazionale incredibili. Solo dopo poche settimane, il cd era gi disco d i platino in quasi tutti i paesi nei quali era uscito, e la stampa internazional e riconosceva al tenore toscano una popolarit degna di Enrico Caruso. Ma sulla spinta del fenomeno montante gi nel 1995 Bocelli aveva offerto il suo tr ibuto alla tradizione del tenore italiano, pubblicando il cd "Viaggio Italiano", ispirato agli emigranti e agli artisti che hanno reso popolare l'opera italiana nel mondo. Cos nel 1998, con il debutto internazionale del disco classico "Aria" , si ritrover a dominare le classifiche di musica classica e a scalare quelle int ernazionali di musica pop. Stessa sorte toccher al successivo "Sogno". Intanto, parallelamente alle tourne, fioccano ormai anche proposte per l'interpre tazione di opere liriche, un'aspirazione coltivata fin da bambino e che finalmen te il tenore riuscito a realizzare. Uno dei suoi pi bei lavori proprio l'incisione della temibile "Tosca" di Giacomo Puccini, un capolavoro che il timido cantante toscano sa rendere con classe e gu sto del fraseggio sopraffini.
