Personal Effectiveness

“ In times of change, learners inherit the earth, while

the learned find themselves beautifully equipped to
deal with a world that no longer exists.”

Hoffer

HAIM GINOTT (1974)

I’ve come to the frightening conclusion that I am the decisive element in
the classroom/team/school.
It’s my personal approach that creates the daily mood that makes the
weather.
As a teacher/leader, I possess a tremendous power to make a
child’s/teacher’s life miserable or joyous. I can be a tool of torture, or
an instrument of inspiration. I can humiliate or humour, hurt or heal.
In all situations it is my response that decides whether a crisis will be
escalated or de-escalated, and a child/teacher humanized or de-
humanised.
West-Burnham and Ireson 2005
•Effective leadership is not just a job, it is a complex
interaction between a range of personal and professional
qualities and experiences. At the heart of effective leadership
is a model of learning, rooted in personal reflection, to
enable and enhance understanding, and to inform action.
