10 healthy males

Placebo
490 ml water, 10 ml sugar free mix

Carbohydrate
6.4% (32g of glucose)

Protein
7% (36g)

Participants walked on a treadmill for 2 hours at a 0% gradient carrying a 25 lb pack

Isometric contraction during a knee extension

Quadriceps electrical stimulation

Electrodes were placed above the patella and over the quadriceps muscles of the non-dominant leg.

Extensor muscles were stimulated with 20 Hz and 50 Hz with 30 seconds of rest

Isokinetic knee extension


Participants completed 2 sets of 5 contractions

Trunk extensor and flexor contraction

Shoulder extensor and flexor contraction from 0 to 180

Pre-test
No difference in pre-test strength or fatigue when beginning each test session

Electrically stimulated contractions


Force decreased immediately after load carriage At 48 hours placebo was 10% below pre-test and CHO and PRO had returned to base (pre-test).

Recovery is improved with a carbohydrate and protein beverage


The 32g of carbohydrates consumed is considerably less than the recommended amount of 1.2g/kg of body weight that is thought to be the optimal amount for glycogen store refueling. No effect on recovery after electrical stimulation Optimal beverage: 6-8% carbohydrates with no more than 14 g of protein to restore glycogen stores and optimized muscle protein synthesis.
