25 October 2010 Dr. James Rund, Senior Vice President, Educational Outreach and Student Services Arizona State University Tempe, AZ 85287 Dear Dr. Rund, We are writing to support the efforts by the Arizona State University Coalition for Human Rights to establish an Advisory Committee for Socially Responsible Investing at ASU. Our committee (formerly the Task Force for Monitoring Human and Labor Rights Issues) grew out of an agreement in 1999 between then-President Peter Likins and our local chapter of Students Against Sweatshops. That agreement articulated the ongoing UA commitment to help ensure that our licensees implement fundamental labor and human rights. In addition, our committee has responsibilities to advise the UA President, and the campus more generally, on important matters relating to human and labor rights. We believe that President Shelton, and President Likins before him, found our advice to be quite important in both specific cases of university licensing, as well as in ethical licensing practices for the UA more generally. The UCMLHRI is itself moving forward on initiatives to broaden such ethical practices to UA contracting more broadly. The presence of such a committee provides an important campus focus for these vital activities, as we attempt to have universities embody the principles of fairness, justice and equity. We therefore, strongly endorse the effort to establish a similar committee at ASU, and hope that you will agree to facilitate this important initiative. If you have questions, or would like more information about our history, structure or activities, please do not hesitate to contact me or other members of the committee.
