How to read and write Hangeul - Part 1

Learning to read and write Hangeul is not as difficult as a lot of people tend to think. Hangeul is a system where you combine different letters into square shapes to form syllables. Basically, one syllablic block in Korean has to have at least one consonant and one vowel.

There are 14 main consonants:

, , , , , , , , , , , , ,

and 10 main vowels:

, , , , , , , , ,

In this lesson we are looking at the consonants and the vowels

, , , , ,

, , , .

has the sound value of [g] or [k]. Its stronger than the Engilsh [g] and weaker than [k]. has the sound value of [n] but you need to put your tongue between your upper and
lower teeth when you make the sound.

has the sound value of [th] or [d], and like , you have to put your tongue between
your upper and lower teeth.

has the sound value of [m] and you can think of has your mouth closed to make it
easier to remember.

has no sound value when it is used at the beginning of a syllable and is used to
fill the empty gap when you just want to express the sound of a vowel.
