. EXERCISES 5&6 Tour guide: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the monument to the Great Fire of London. Sheri: Wow. Its really tall, isnt it? Tour guide: Yes, it is. Its 61 metres because thats the distance from here to the bakers house in Pudding Lane. Thats where the Great Fire started. Sheri: Who designed the monument? Tour guide: Christopher Wren and his friend Dr Robert Hooke. It took six years to build. The work started in 1671 and it didnt end until 1677. Tour guide: Everyone, please follow me. Im going to take you up to the top of the monument. Sheri: I dont believe it. Are we actually going up there how many steps are there? Tour guide There are 311 steps to the top of the column. Are you ready? OK! That wasnt too bad, was it? Male tourist: Thats the last time Im going up 311 steps historical monument or not! Were Mr. Wren and Dr Hook e crazy? Tour guide: No, as a matter of fact, I think they were quite clever. King Charles II ruled at the time of the fire, and he was very interested in science. Wren and Hooke designed the monument as a scientific instrument. Male tourist: A scientific instrument? What do you mean? Tour guide: Well, theres an underground laboratory and a special telescope. People used it to look at the stars. We can go back down now and see the underground laboratory. Male tourist: Oh no, thats more than 300 steps again!
