This is the verbatim transcript of
four long interviews with the Prime
Minister of India granted to Mr.
Mende at the beginning of the year,
and almost ranks as a new book by
Mr. Nehru himself. For the con-
versations were designed to elicit and
illustrate Nehru’s views on a wide
variety of topics, and he had agreed
in advance that they should be tape-
recorded for publication in book
form.
No topic was barred as too con-
troversial, and a brief description can
barely indicate the scope of discus-
sions ranging from, for example, the
potentialities for India of atomic
energy to the problem of the Un-
touchables. What will be clear, how-
ever, to every reader of this book is
that, faced by a skilful interviewer
alert to probe, Mr. Nehru spoke with
a candour and sincerity rare in the
public utterances of contemporary
statesmen. Whether he is discussing
the formative influences in his own
life, Gandhi’s influence on the
development of modern India, his
country’s position vis-a-vis other
Asian nations, or India’s neutrality,
and attitude to the cold war, there is
no withholding or evasion. Mr.
Nehru is a key figure in the world
today. This book is an invaluable aid
to the understanding of his aims and
attitudes.
