Shape Memory Alloys An Introduction Seminar Report submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the award of degree of Bachelor of Technology By Amit Batra Roll No : 97D01002 under the guidance of Prof. P. M. Mujumdar Pe Department of Aerospace Engineering Indian Institute of Technology Bombay November, 1999 Acknowledgement I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Prof. P. M. Mujumdar for the invaluable guidance and support given to me during the cours¢ of my seminar. November 1, 1999 ‘Amit Batra Abstract Shape memory alloys are functional materials which offer attractive potentials such as re- versible strains of several percentage, generation of high recovery stresses, high power-to- weight ratio, high damping and high fatigue life. This seminar gives an introduction to the origin, mechanism and characteristics of the unique phenomena of shape memory effect and superelastic effects. Different properties and characterisation techniques are also discussed. Various applications in the fields of engineering and bio-medicine are briefly discussed.
