Sodium hydroxide, NaOH, commonly known as caustic soda, is industrially manufactured by the electrolysis of brine. It is prepared by heating an excess of slaked lime with 10% sodium trioxocarbonate (IV) solution, which is filtered off. Sodium chloride is found in some areas as rock salt which can be mined as a solid or pumped out of the ground as brine.
