Accelerated Reader
A requirement for our third graders this year is taking AR tests each marking period. For the first marking period each child will need to take two AR tests at his or her Just Right Level. They must score 80% or better to pass the test. The students should be working on an AR book every week until they have passed the tests. We suggest having your child read his or her book a couple of times before taking the test.

What have we been up to?

Language Arts: Our second unit in language arts is Thinking Like a Scientist. We will start working on Theme 3, What is light? on Monday. During read aloud, we are coming close to finishing, My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead Moore. The new vocabulary words for Theme 3 Week 1 are monitor, pattern, projected, beam, and absorption. The third comprehension strategy is infering. When you infer, you use your own ideas to help you understand what you read. In word study the students will be working on long vowels with a silent e or the Vce rule. During writing workshop the students will begin learning elements of persuasive writing. Math: The Chapter 3 Test will be Friday, Nov. 18. The students will bring home their study guide on Thursday. Please help your child this weekend by having them practice subtraction with regrouping. They have been taught how they can use a model to help with regrouping. It is a good idea to keep practicing IXL math at home.

Field Trip
We will be taking a field trip to the Michigan State Capitol & Michigan Historical Museum on Monday, Dec. 5, 2011. The students will be leaving school at 8:30 and returning to school at 3:00. We will be eating at the museum in the cafeteria so the students will need a sack lunch/drink. We will be asking for a donation of $8.00 to cover the Historical Museum and bus. Thank you.

You can bring your child a special lunch or they can eat a sack lunch in our room. The children will not be going to the cafeteria to get hot lunch during this time.

Miss Schallmos Spot:

All throughout the week Room 20 has been busy getting ready for Veterans Day. The students even learned about the importance of this years date with Veterans Day falling on 11/11/2011. Abby Sjoberg read a poem during our Veterans Day assembly Friday morning. There was also a chance for our Vice President, Paige Smith to speak during the assembly as well. Be sure to ask your son or daughter about the Veterans who came to Scott School this morning, as well as the Veterans Day cards they made throughout the week to honor those who have served our country.

School Elections
Congratulations to Paige Smith!! Room 20 now has the Scott School Vice President in our very own class. Paige was elected on Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2011 by the third and fourth graders here at Scott School.
