The industrial revolution made a significant

contribution to the development of management thought before 20th century. The substitution of human power with machine power made it possible to manufacture goods in large numbers more economically. The growing size of organizations led to the requirement of managers to handle various tasks like planning, organizing, assessing demand of goods, availability of raw materials etc

18th century management literature


The wealth of nations(Adam smith): Great

contributions to management occurred during and after 18th century. The wealth of nations by adam smith(1776) described the economic advantage that can be derived form division of labour.

19th century
The modern management discipline evolved in 19th

century. Classical economists such as John staurt mill(1806-1873) took forward the work of adam smith and provided a background to resource allocation, production and pricing allocation etc Robert owen(1771-1858) made the first social experiment in managing others by instituting performance evaluation system, incentive based pay system, working conditions, and and cooperation among employees etc
