Bar magnets

• Bar magnets
are the very
common
things to us.
• But their
magnetic
structure is
rather
complicated.
Opposites attract
• If we consider
the field line
approach we
see that field
lines from north
pole converge
at south pole so
they form a
structure which
looks as they
are attracting
each other
which is the
right picture.
Similar repel
• Similarly in the
case of same
poles which do
not accept field
lines from other
form a structure
which looks like
a repelling
structure which
is also the case
in this
arrangement.
• So when
the
arrangeme
nt is in
repelling
condition
magnets
exert a
force on
each other
in opposite
Indirection.
this project I tried to explore the type of this
force between magnets
“Repulsive” arrangement
• To study the force between
magnets frictionless motion
conditions are the best.
• We performed the experiment on
air-track using videocom motions
software.
• We performed the experiment in
three parts: -
IV. keeping one slider in rest other moving
towards it
V. moving both sliders towards each other
• We kept one slider moving towards
Case 1 other which was in rest
• Velocity graph when one cart
case 1 is moving towards the rest
one
Case 1 • Acceleration graph
• We can see that at d=20 cm the force is
Case 1 enough to change the direction of motion
Case 2 • Both carts were moving to each
other path graph
• Velocity graph
Case 2 • Newton’s third law can be
seen
Case • Acceleration graph
2
Case • One cart is at rest and attached
to a spring other is moving
3 towards it.
Case 3 • Velocity graph
Case 3 Keeping a block at rest attached to spring and
other moving towards it
Conclusion and applications

• From these experiments we can

study interaction between two
magnetic dipoles which is useful in
magnetic levitation train.
