Active Solute Transport

I.

Active transport A. Characteristics 1. Transport against concentration gradient (uphill)

2. Energy dependent

B. Primary active transport 1. Uses ATP as energy source ATPases - also called "pumps"

4.

H+-ATPase - located on inner mitochondrial membranes, lysosomes & synaptic vesicles

moves H+ out of cytosol, controls intracellular pH & acidifies certain organelles

Secondary active transport

1. Uses concentration gradient of an ion as energy source, usually Na+. May use H+ or Cl- in the stomach.

Thought Questions

Digitalis (Digoxin) is prescribed to patients with congestive heart failure. Digitalis increases the contractility of the heart in these patients presumably by increasing the amount of calcium in the heart muscle. It is known that digitalis inhibits the Na+/K+ATPase in the heart. How would the inhibition of cardiac muscle Na+/K+-ATPase lead to an increased amount of calcium in the muscle.
