Day One - Speech Slide 3 Conflict is defined as a struggle to resist or a contest of opposing interests. It is an unavoidable part of human interaction.

Conflict is everywhere, from the jury room to the class room to the board room. This course will prepare students to cope with this challenging issue in a way that benefits themselves and their organizations as a whole. Slide 4 The CoB should offer this course to makes its graduates more effective in the workplace. This will boost the prestige of the college by showing employers that JMU graduates have above-average workplace conflict resolution skills. This especially ties in with the CoBs core mission to make itself a main source of talent for recruiters and also to continuously innovate and improve upon the quality of its undergraduate program. Slide 5 Students should take this course for one reason competition. Employees who can identify potential sources of conflict and resolve them will be more effective workers. Those who can master key details such as body language and resolve conflicts without alienating coworkers or superiors will be much more successful in their careers than those who cannot. Slide 6 This class will take place over Spring break. Students will be expected to purchase the book How to Deal with Difficult People and be familiar with course material from GCOM and COB 202 Interpersonal Skills. Slide 7 Heres our week at a glance. We will start slow, with a diagnostic test and a special celebrity guest speaker. Throughout the succeeding days, we will touch on different aspects of conflict resolution. Day 2 will feature the causes of conflict; days 3 and 4 will be about conflict resolutions, and by the end of day 5 we will have finished conflict resolution and how to maintain strong interpersonal relationships. Capping this off with Slide 8 -Slide 9 On the first day, we will present to the class a short 3-item diagnostic test. This test will assess students current knowledge of conflict management techniques and lay the groundwork for the remainder of the course. Slide 10 We will conclude the first day with a guest lecture by Bill Gates, former CEO of

Microsoft and current chair of the Gates Foundation. He will speak as to the importance of healthy conflict resolutions and their impact on workplace cohesion.
