Dear Y6 EAL Parents, Since returning from our extended school closure, we have been inquiring into the current flooding situation in Thailand. These events have made a natural connection to our current unit about the way humans share the planet. The in-depth inquiry will be guided by the central idea:

Understanding the big picture empowers us to live with the future in mind.
We will be specifically looking at: our knowledge (what we know), emotions (how we feel), experiences (how we were involved) and how we can apply the lessons weve learned about this situation to the future. The focus in Language Arts and EAL will be deepening our understanding of non-fiction texts. We will continue developing our critical reading skills. In writing there will particular emphasis on persuasive forms of writing. How can you help? Please discuss the following in your home language as this will help aid overall understanding: Ask questions about your childs thinking and about what theyre learning. Discuss the reliability of the sources of information you have been using about the flooding in Thailand. Discuss plans your family may be establishing for any potentially similar events in the future. Unit Concepts: Consequences Causation Change Connection Perspective Impact Interdependence Truth Unit Vocabulary: Evacuation Rehabilitation Relief Aid Donations Debate Sustainable Relocation Flood related vocabulary and definitions can be found here: http://www.bangkokpost.com/learning/vo cabulary/200842/flood-related-vocabulary
