KEY POINTS

Write a resume for each application Use the same font as the cover letter - size 12 font (Times New Roman recommended) Use dot points and headings and keep the information short 2- 3 pages maximum length A Career Objective is optional and must be very well written to be effective Capture the employers attention on the first page with your relevant skills and experience Address the essential selection criteria and give specific examples Avoid repeating yourself or using words like exceptional or vast Check your resume very carefully for correct spelling and English expression

FORMAT
PERSONAL DETAILS (Heading not required) Include your name, address, phone numbers and email at the top. Information about your age, nationality, religion or marital status is not required. You should include a professional email address and have an appropriate voicemail message on your phone. EDUCATION You will include dates, (e.g. 2007) your course name, and Victoria University. You can list majors but subjects are not required. One line will cover your final year of school. Academic achievements can also be added here. Membership of your Professional Association demonstrates job readiness and can be added under a separate heading. SKILLS This section should demonstrate that you have the skills and experience that the employer is looking for. Address the skills under headings e.g. Communication Skills. Use action words and show where you have gained those skills e.g. Provided efficient service to customers at K Mart EMPLOYMENT All employment is important so list any fulltime, casual, part time or voluntary work that you have done. Begin with the most recent dates. If you have relevant work experience, list it at the top under that heading. Give your title and the name of the organisation followed by a short list of 3 or 4 dot points showing the duties you carried out. Some jobs may be Student Career Development 2008

grouped under 1 heading- e.g. hospitality INTERESTS This section demonstrates that you have interests outside of study and have skills, abilities and achievements in areas like sport, music or community work. List them in dot points and be specific. REFEREES Include the names and contact details of 3 referees who have agreed to provide a reference for you.
