Reviewer Guidelines

Introduction
Does this section serve as a guide for the portfolio? Does the author reflect on his or her experiences
transitioning to doctoral studies? What could be improved?
This section looks good. It gives a nice summary oI what the website will contain and has your
voice as a beginning student. The quote Irom Harvard on the opening page is great!

Intellectual Identity
Do you get a sense of what the authors area of expertise is? Does the author provide a clear, concise
explanation of his or her emerging intellectual identity? What could be improved?
$tudent achievement is deIinitely an end goal Ior Jill`s interests. Working with teachers and
leaders to develop leadership and trust are at the core oI her intellectual identity. This has many
'threads that will lead to multiple avenues Ior research.

Research Interests
Do the research interests clearly connect with the authors intellectual identity? Does the author review
and properly cite a minimum of ten references? Is a clear hole in the research identified? Do the
research questions address that hole? Do the research questions connect with each other and the
authors intellectual identity? Is the significance argument significant? What could be improved?
The review is comprehensive and thorough. Each section is well developed and ties together well
in the summary section. A Iew minor notes: header should be the part oI the title aIter the :. On
page 6, the last section beIore school culture. I`m not sure iI the intention is to set up a contrast
between teachers and leaders the 'but seems to indicate so, but since it is two Iorms oI capital,
perhaps not. Just caught my eye. Also, on p. 9 I Iound myselI wondering, 'How do you measure
the inIluence oI leaders on reducing variance? This paper may not be the place to answer that,
but it was a thought. Lastly, I don`t know iI it would be appropriate to blend some oI the
resources in the Iirst sections to show more than one researcher has concluded the same
inIormation. The structure throughout is very clear and you use organization well to Irame and
set up complex ideas

%heoretical Framework
Does the author provide an adequate summary of the theoretical framework? Does the theory connect
with the authors intellectual identity and research interests? What could be improved?
The citation at the end oI each sentence in the opening paragraph is a bit distraction. Could
variety in attribution be added with a signal phrase: 'According to. ? May not be a big issue
There`s a nice connection to your intellectual identity. Check the reIerence list just Ior Iormatting
(indenting, etc rather than APA).

Is the IRB certificate completed? Does the author discuss issues related to his or her area of interest in a
clear and logical manner? Are there additional issues that author has not discussed? What could be
improved?
The IRB certiIicate is completed. The writing is clear and I appreciated the inclusion oI the
master narrative. As you Iinalize, review Ior clarity at the sentence level. For example, I`m not
sure what you mean by: l need explore Lhe consLrucLs of my research wlLh so l galn a deep
undersLandlng Lo my Loplc noL [usL cursory knowledge Lo save Llme

Resume and Vita
Is the vita complete and professional? What could be improved?
Format looks great. Do you need to include proIessional and/or academic reIerences? Perhaps
include Dr. Jain since she`s your advisor?

ourse Plan
Is the course plan completed? Does the authors plan clearly reflect his or her research and theoretical
interests? What could be improved?
The course plan is as complete as it can be given not all electives that will be available are known
at this point. Will you be able to complete by 2013? Even with summer school, can you complete
in two years? Is it possible to adjust the upload so the document reads leIt to right? I couldn`t
Iind a way to adjust the view.

Reflective 1ournal
Does the fournal demonstrate critical reflection throughout the course? Are there issues in the fournal
that should be included elsewhere in the portfolio?
Reading your journal was a pleasure. I could see so many oI the same stages I`ve experienced
over the course oI this semester. Your questions are reIlective yet Iocused, the writing is clear
and your voice becomes stronger with each entry. I can see your vision oI research and your role
coming more and more into Iocus with each entry

Reflection
Does the author critically reflect on his or her strengths and weaknesses? Does the author discuss
faculty members who may help address these issues or help develop his or her intellectual identity? What
could be improved?
While Iaculty members who might help are not included, the reIlection on growth is well done.
There`s a nice building and in Iact an area you identiIy Ior growth voice and analysis is
evident in this writing! Unpacking thinking and making yourselI vulnerable are part oI the
process, and it`s clear you`ve struggled with that and come out a winner!

General Feedback
The website is easy to navigate and each page builds upon the last. There is a lot oI white space
on each page. Consider adding pictures or other design elements to draw the reader to the
writing.

Good research was not included in the reviewer guidelines sheet, but I included some comments.
