Surah al-Balad (The City)

ِ‫بِسْمِ الِ الرّحْمنِ الرّحِيم‬

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

 Surah al-Balad (The City)

ِ‫لَ ُأقْسِمُ بِهَذَا ا ْلبَلَد‬

[90:1] Nay! I swear by this city.
 Surah al-Balad (The City)

ِ‫ل بِهَذَا ا ْلبَلَد‬

ّ ِ‫َوأَنتَ ح‬

[90:2] And you shall be made free from obligation

in this city--
 Surah al-Balad (The City)

َ‫وَوَالِدٍ َومَا وَلَد‬

[90:3] And the begetter and whom he begot.

 Surah al-Balad (The City)

ٍ‫ن فِي َكبَد‬

َ ‫خلَقْنَا الِْنسَا‬
َ ْ‫لَقَد‬

[90:4] Certainly We have created man to be in

distress.
 Surah al-Balad (The City)

ٌ‫سبُ أَن لّن يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْ ِه أَحَد‬

َ ْ‫َأيَح‬

[90:5] Does he think that no one has power over

him?
 Surah al-Balad (The City)

‫ت مَالً لّبَدًا‬
ُ ‫يَقُولُ أَ ْهلَ ْك‬

[90:6] He shall say: I have wasted much wealth.

 Surah al-Balad (The City)

ٌ‫سبُ أَن لّ ْم يَرَهُ أَحَد‬

َ ْ‫َأيَح‬

[90:7] Does he think that no one sees him?

 Surah al-Balad (The City)

ِ‫عيْنَيْن‬
َ ُ‫أَلَ ْم نَجْعَل لّه‬

[90:8] Have We not given him two eyes,

 Surah al-Balad (The City)

ِ‫وَلِسَانًا وَشَ َفتَيْن‬

[90:9] And a tongue and two lips,

 Surah al-Balad (The City)

ِ‫وَهَدَ ْينَاهُ النّجْدَيْن‬

[90:10] And pointed out to him the two

conspicuous ways?
 Surah al-Balad (The City)

َ‫فَلَ اقْتَحَمَ الْعَقَبَة‬

[90:11] But he would not attempt the uphill road,

 Surah al-Balad (The City)

ُ‫ك مَا الْعَ َقبَة‬

َ ‫وَمَا أَدْرَا‬

[90:12] And what will make you comprehend what

the uphill road is?
 Surah al-Balad (The City)

ٍ‫فَكّ َرقَبَة‬

[90:13] (It is) the setting free of a slave,

 Surah al-Balad (The City)

ٍ‫طعَا ٌم فِي َيوْمٍ ذِي مَسْغَبَة‬

ْ ِ‫أَ ْو إ‬

[90:14] Or the giving of food in a day of hunger

 Surah al-Balad (The City)

ٍ‫يَتِيمًا ذَا مَقْ َربَة‬

[90:15] To an orphan, having relationship,

 Surah al-Balad (The City)

ٍ‫أَوْ مِسْكِينًا ذَا َمتْرَبَة‬

[90:16] Or to the poor man lying in the dust.

 Surah al-Balad (The City)

ِ‫صوْا بِالصّبْر‬
َ ‫ن آ َمنُوا وَ َتوَا‬َ ‫ن الّذِي‬
َ ِ‫ثُمّ كَانَ م‬
ِ‫َوتَوَاصَوْا بِا ْلمَرْحَمَة‬

[90:17] Then he is of those who believe and charge

one another to show patience, and charge one
another to show compassion.
 Surah al-Balad (The City)

ِ‫أُ ْولَئِكَ أَصْحَابُ الْ َميْمَنَة‬

[90:18] These are the people of the right hand.

 Surah al-Balad (The City)

ِ‫ب ا ْلمَشْأَمَة‬
ُ ‫وَالّذِينَ كَفَرُوا بِآيَا ِتنَا هُ ْم َأصْحَا‬

[90:19] And (as for) those who disbelieve in our

communications, they are the people of the left
hand.

ٌ‫علَيْهِ ْم نَا ٌر مّؤْصَ َدة‬

َ

[90:20] On them is fire closed over.
