Pre-sea Training for Electro-Technical Officers on merchant ships

For certification as Electro-Technical Officer, 6 months onboard training is mandatory.


This course is targeted at fresh entrants to the merchant navy with a background of Engineering to increase their knowledge level and ease their familiarization with Marine Electrical equipments. The traditional Electrical Officers role has been integrated with modern day requirement in Electronics, Computerization, Control engineering and automation. The duties of an Electrical Officer has to operate, maintain and control all the electrical control, Instrumentation and automation systems in close working relationship with the Marine Engine Officers. The Electrical Officer is directly responsible for: The maintenance of the vessels electrical and electronic equipment. The adoption of safe working practices on board. UMS test schedules, alarm tests etc. Assistance during maintenance as required during electrical equipment maintenance. First level maintenance of communications, radio and navigation equipment. The thrust areas of this course are: The Electrical Officer will be trained on trainers in Electrical lab, which are ship specific in usage and can be used as a tool to test/enhance skills. The course will include familiarization with Bridge and Engine Room and Communication equipment equal weight age being given to equipments familiarization- theory and practical operational/ maintenance knowledge. The candidate will have first hand exposure to complete Bridge Control systems and UMS ships, including troubleshooting and maintenance. Candidates ability to work independently and conform to ship board requirements will be emphasized by using Human resources techniques and by experienced Electrical Officers and Chief engineers. Following compulsory STCW courses are an integral part of this course: Elementary First Aid (EFA). Personal Survival Techniques (PST). Personal Safety & Social Responsibility (PSSR). Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting (FPFF). Oil Tanker Familiarization course (OTFC). After Completion of this course, Candidates are required to obtain CDC, INDOS and other shipping documents, which are essential for joining the Vessel.
Duration : 17 weeks. ELIGIBILITY: i) Passed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English with minimum 50 % marks in final exams or must have obtained 50% marks in English subject either in 10th or 12th standard exam, from a recognised board. ii) Passed three years Diploma or four yearss Degree with 60% marks in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunication/ Communication Engineering, or Electronics and Instrumentation or equivalent. iii) The diploma /degree courses must have been recognised by any State or Central Government or the AICTE,

MEDICAL STANDARD: Candidates should be physically fit for sea service under standard norms, with eyesight up to +/- 2.5, and with no colour blindness. Candidates will have to undergo a full eyesight test conducted by the Mercantile Marine Department (MMD) before being finally selected. CAREER GRAPH Degree / Diploma in Engineering. Interview, Medical and selection. 4 months of Pre-Sea Training in Marine Institute / Workshop. Obtain CDC, Indos and shipping documents required prior joining the vessel. Sail as Trainee electrical Officer for 6 months; Promoted to Junior electrical officer. Sail as junior electrical officer for 6 months; promoted to Electrical Officer. Sail as Electrical Officer on the ship.

2,25,000 approx.

Pay package:
As trainee electrical officer: 350 ~ 500 USD. As junior electrical officer: 800 ~ 1500 USD. As electrical officer: 2500 ~ 5000 USD ( as per the experience).
