Fish Feed Demand Potential

Traditional Feed 3.15 MMT fish X FCR of 4=12.60 MMT of raw material is currently used. Modern Feed opportunity 3.15 MMT fish X 1.5 FCR=4.72 MMT feed (potential) Aim 50% of this for conversion to feeds - the potential is 2.36 MMT.

Transformation in Feeds

Feed Characteristics (Fish)

Most commercial feeds have 28% Protein and 3% fat ASA-IM is recommending 32% protein and 6% fat to aim at higher quality feeds Feed pellet die sizes used are 3mm to 6mm Feeds are broadcast in ponds using boats as ponds are large Pelleted sinking feeds are also becoming popular

Feed ingredients used

Maize gluten meal Soybean meal Wheat flour Rape seed meal Broken rice Rice bran Fish oil Soy oil Soy lecithin Fish meal ( local and imported) Vitamin and Minerals

How much fish can be produced using the feed production potential
Fish to be produced using 1,039,550 MT Feed @ FCR of 1.5 693,033 MT

Hectares to be cultivated for 693,033 MT 77,000 Ha fish@9MT/Ha/Yr Total cultivated area in AP province Present AP cultivated area on feeds Additional area that can be feed based subject to further demand building 83,333 Ha 20,833 Ha 57,000 Ha

Future developments for feed will be based on

Avoiding to mix technologies (traditional & modern feeds) Increase in species range Fish to be processed/value added Infrastructure-set for traditional feed (needs to change for feeds based systems) More users to move from traditional feeds to modern feeds (Carps)

Future developments for creating demand for feeds

1. Carry out feeding demonstrations in regions where feed-based system is not established- increases user base of modern feeds. 2. Demonstrate feasibility and ROI for culture system diversification (cages). Adds an additional avenue for feed usage.

Demand building for Feeds

1. Provide extrusion processing advise and knowledge-Extrusion is a new tool for aqua feed in India-increases feed output. 2. Provide feed formulation supportopportunity for the industry to move to high quality feeds. 3. Promote fish processing, hatcheries for new species and species diversification.
