Son of Malaya is a novel written by James Fernandez in early 1960. The story begins in a Kampung Sungai Linang In Perak. Through the character of Hassan, it trace the childhood days of a young boy in his kampung . The tragedy of his fathers death in a tiger attack, throw upon his young shoulder the whole responsibility of looking after the family.

The Japanese invasion of Malaya results in Hassan exchanging his idyllic kampong life for the life of soldier. By a strange coincidence, he dies in circumstances similar to his fathers death. As the story unfolds, it brings to the fore faith in God, patriotism, filial piety, and brotherhood of man which transcends race and religion. It culminates in the greatest sacrifice a person could ever do for his country, laying down ones life for it. These elements would find strong parallels in the moral value of the Malaysian Secondary School Integrated Curriculum.
Besides the moralistic strands, literary elements like simple poetry are also written in. This story is written in simple language, so that it would not hamper the young readers enjoyment of the story.
