As

the colony grew, settlers began to treat the Native Americans even more poorly. They forced men, women, and children into slavery. Things grew more tense (upset) when the settlers built in the town of Beaufort. The town was located in southern South Carolina, where the Yemassee had lived for a very long time. The Yemassee became VERY angry. They were angry about losing their LAND, UNFAIR TRADE, and SLAVERY. ANOTHER PROBLEM!! **DISEASE! Native Americans became very ill from the diseases brought by the settlers. They were not able to fight off the new diseases, and MANY died.

THE YEMASSEE WAR!!

1715, a war began between the Yemassee tribe and the settlers. This war was known as the Yemassee War It lasted for over a year! Other tribes joined in The Catawba fought with the Yemassee The Cherokee fought with the British settlers. A VERY violent war many lived lost on BOTH sides. When it ended, the two sides made a truce (agreement to stop fighting) MOST of the Yemassee went South toward Florida.
