LEARNING

1. LEARNING IS A CONSCIOUS EFFORT. It involves receiving information about the language, transforming it into knowledge through intellectual effort and storing it for future use through memorization.

2.THE OBJECTIVE IS TO UNDERSTAND RULES.

The learner is expected to follow exact rules of the language which are dissected and analyzed. Understanding requires deductive reasoning.

y 3. IT IS TECHNICAL BUT NOT PRACTICAL.

Both learning and teaching are based on a syllabus. Student studies theory in the absence of practice. He has to imagine instead of feeling the content.

y 4. ERROR CORRECTION IS CONSTANT.

One values the correct and represses the incorrect leaving little room for spontaneity. It must be understood that mistakes are just natural deviations.

5. STUDENT PARTICIPATION IS PASSIVE. Teacher is an authoritative figure and students have a little say in choosing and discussing the content they want to learn.

 6. IRREGULARITY OF THE LANGUAGE FRUSTRATES THE STUDENT.

The effort of accumulating knowledge about the language with all its irregularity becomes frustrating because of lack of familiarity with the language .

7. FOCUS IS NOT ON COMMUNICATION SKILLS. Focus is only on written skills. Form is of greater importance than communication. The student never masters the use of the structures in conversation.

 8.IT PRODUCES UNEMPLOYABLE GRADUATES.

Certified graduates lack communication skills .They have a poor pronunciation and limited vocabulary. They are of little value to the market.

FACTORS AFFECTING LEARNING

1. GROUP SIZE Large groups hamper learning. A Teacher cannot have a one- to -one conversation with all the students of a class.

 2. NATIVITY OF THE TEACHER.

Only a non-native Teacher can understand the needs and concerns of non-native learners.

 3. AGE

Young students can learn faster but only mature students can use the language in a proper way.

SUGGESTIONS

1. THERE MUST BE EXCEPTIONS IN RULES. If a few rules are bent and twisted, it must be accepted because communication is above rules.

2. LANGUAGE SHOULD NOT BE DRAWN OUT OF THE LEARNER UNLESS HE IS READY. A Student should be given sufficient time to learn and understand the language as per his own pace.

 3. FOCUS ON INTERESTS OF THE LEARNER.

Needs and interests of the learner should be understood and dealt with accordingly.
