Comparison of two and four stroke cycle diesel engines y Theoretically, the two stroke compression engine is able to produce twice as much power as the four stroke compression engine as with all two and four stroke engines. A four stroke diesel engine will produce similar power and torque as a two stroke diesel engine given that the engine cylinder volume is 1.7 times larger than that of the two stroke. In a four stroke engine, the same parts that generate power are also responsible for the induction of fresh air and expulsion of exhaust gases. While in the two stoke, a separate blower is responsible for the task of removing exhaust and bringing in fresh air. The two stroke engine s air pumping work is greater because 40-50% more air is needed to produce the same power a four stroke would with less air. 1/10 to 1/5 of the upward stroke of the two stroke engine is needed to empty and fill the cylinder. Replenishing time of exhaust air and fresh air in a two stroke is a lot less than in the four stroke engine. Comparing 33% of the time to 50% of the time respectively. In turn, more power will be needed to force more air (40-50% more as stated previously) into the cylinder in a shorter time. Typically, more power is consumed by the piston in the four cylinder engine for emptying and filling the cylinder due to pumping and friction losses at low speeds. However, when engine speeds are increased the two stroke blower will consume more power doing the same job; about 15% maximum. At reduced load for a certain speed will consume proportionally more power that is produced by the engine. A two stroke engine produces less noise, and runs more smoothly due to the absence of reversals of loading on bearings in the four stroke.
