, Dingal (2012) Sensitivity of Sterculia foetida seed extract against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. Research Paper. Philippine Science High School- Central Visayas Campus, Talaytay, Argao, Cebu.

ABSTRACT This study is aimed at gathering crude extract from the seeds of Sterculia foetida, commonly known as Kalumpang, and to determine its resistivity against gram positive and gram negative bacteria. The seed extract was obtained by the use of methanol as the solvent and was then treated to two organisms Staphylococcus aureus as a gram-positive bacteria representative and Escherichia coli as a gram - negative bacteria representative. The Disc - Diffusion Test was employed in microbial testing. Methanol was used as the negative control and Amoxicillin was used as positive control. The zones of inhibition were measured for each of the discs found in each plate. Results showed the measurement of the zones of inhibition, where it can be observed that the seed extract is more potent in inhibiting the growth of E. coli than that of S. aureus. Therefore, it is more resistive to gram - negative bacteria than to gram-positive ones.
