The devils wife 7 minute IOC

for Monday 13th: use the questions on the attachment on yesterday's email (Contextualising Duffy for the IOC) to prepare and record an intro and analysis of 2 linked features (about 6-8 minutes' worth of recording, no more) of The Devil's Wife OR another poem of your choice.....see the Lesson Outcome for Lesson 6 on the vle and follow instructions, but add an intro at the beginning. You can do this based on a 40 line extract from The Devil's Wife OR any other poem of your choice.

The devils wife Dirt and Medusa

From 1963, to 1965, Ian Brady and Myra Hindley terrorized the area of greater Manchester. They killed sexually assaulted and murdered 5 children in total. These murders captivated the interest and imagination of the british media partially because they were so horrific, and partially because of the nature of the killers who commited them. Myra Hindley and Ian Brady met in their office. They had a very strange relationship, and Brady mistreated her and used her. When the british press picked up on the story, their nickname for Brady was the devil So naturally, Hindley was the devils wife.

The devils wife is without a doubt the longest poem duffy wrote for this collection, and its split in to many parts, each representing a different aspect of the trial and sentencing Because we get 40 lines in the IOC, I will be analyzing the first two sections of the devils wife Dirt and Medusa.

The title Dirt refers to several different points in this poem 1) Brady treated Myra Hindley like dirt. 2) The press referred to the couple as dirt 3) The childrens bodies were buried in shallow dirt. Dirt is divided up into 3 stanzas of 6 lines each this is unusual because Carol Ann Duffys poems are usually relatively free flowing and unrestricted As with ALL of duffys poems, this one is told from the point of view of the female, in this case Hadley Duffy uses some assonance in this poem, and a triplet chewing my gum, insolent, dumb This is to draw attention to the low self esteem and the way that Myra Hadley acted and thought of herself.

Now onto the close analysis Some of the language used in this poem is interesting in the sense that it has other meanings than the obvious one. Id lie on my bed at home, on fire for him other than talking about the sex, these words are specifically chosen because of the connotations they have with the devil and hell. On fire When the devils wife says he entered me she refers to both physically but also in another way. Like a possession, she claims that the devil entered her very soul.

This is important because Myria Hindley claimed for many years that Ian Brady controlled her and made her commit the unspeakable acts that she did.
