    Ashoka was the emperor of the Maurya Empire in ancient India. He was known as a unique ruler because after a bloody battle he gave up war and embraced Buddhism. He promoted policies of nonviolence, tolerance of all religions, and respect for all life. Ashoka established institutions to spread Buddhist teachings and sent missionaries throughout Asia to share Buddhist ideas. He is remembered today as one of India's greatest emperors due to his moral example and efforts to spread peace.
