MASS CULTURE OF ALGAE

DEFINITION
Mass culture refers to the culture of economically valable edible/medically important microalgae in a commercial scale for large scale production, quality control, harvesting, processing & sale for product of commercial purpose.

PROPERTIES
1. Done in commercially viable species. 2. Edible or medically important algae are cultured. 3. Cultural practices emphasis on large scale and commercially viable products. 4. Cultural product is marketed by agencies and company.

FACTORS AFFECTING MASS CULTURE


1. Type & structure of bioreactor. 2. Media composition, pH, components, water temperature etc. 3. Method of mixing & turbulence. 4. Process of control of contamination. 5. Steps/ Methods of control of cell/ biomass. 6. Dehydration & drying of biomass followed by subsequent marketing &/or storage.
