    The Republic

    -Rome was ruled by the Senate. But the senators became very corrupt. -The Roman Republic became unstable.

    The Army
    Being a Roman soldier meant working full-time. The soldiers supported their generals, not the Senate. Generals became very powerful.

    The Poor
    There were more and more poor people in Rome. They hated the rich senators.

    If these powerful generals began to help the poor, they could easily take over power from the Senate. (Some generals made use of this opportunity to rise to power.)
