ABSTRACT In this paper, we propose a robust real-time head tracking algorithm using a pan-tilt-zoom camera. The algorithm uses
the color histogram similarity as a feature and the mean-shift method as an optimization scheme. Based on the model histogram of the
human head, which is obtained in advance, and shape information head tracking is performed. For robust tracking, we also use the
color histogram of the result of the previous frame in addition to the model histogram. To guarantee the convergence of the meanshift, we propose an efficient scheme to make the initial point locate in a region of convergence. The results show that the proposed
algorithm provides good performance even though a target moves very fast and the background is quite complicate.
