Merit Rating Method

Introduction

y It is a formal and systematic procedure that evaluates

employees on their personality, contributions and potentials.


y It is done in terms of their Personality traits

(integrity, judgment, etc) and Qualities(leadership).

History

y W D Scott was the first to introduce this, prior to

World War I.
y Inspired by FW Taylors concept of Scientific

Management (systematic observation and management, task specialization), Scott invented Man to Man Comparison.

Advantages
y Systematic evaluation of employees y Facilitates matching of job with individual. y Helpful in identifying weakness of the employees which

may systematically be removed.


y Provides base for guidance and counseling for the

employees.
y Develops healthy competition among workers to improve

performance.

Disadvantages
y The ratings may be improper due to improper

weightage of factors.
y Assessment of irrelevant factors may result in

deceptive rating.
y Halo Effect (Bias)
