The Election of 1800
Details:
Generally Americans are fed up with the Federalists party. 
Whiskey rebellion, taxes up. Alien and sedition acts. John 
Adams runs again in 1800. Hamilton doesn’t really like Adams 
but he is still chosen for the party. Adams and Pickney

Mudslinging. Calling Jefferson an atheist and immoral. 
Jefferson and Burr end up with the same number of electoral 
votes.  Burr wants to run against Jefferson. The House of 
representatives votes. Federalists still dominate congress, 
Hamilton steps in and Bashes burr by calling him dangerous 
and selfish, doesn’t care about US. Jeff wins. 

Revolution of 1800:
There is a peaceful transfer of power, no bloodshed. People could handle having political 
parties.

Changes in the Jefferson Administration
Grown up in Virginia. Been a very wealthy man, and married into a wealthy family. Still 
very frugal and deep thinker. ambasitor to France, spends a lot of time there. Horrible 
speaker. Something about a table. More democratic style. Went from a traditional head of 
table to a round table. Gets rid of the luxurious carriage and just walks. Jefferson scales 
back on American military to cut taxes. Anyone fined under sedition acts. The 
government would reinburse them. 

Leaves alone:
Federalist in office, Keeps them there. Rids the fears of federalists. Gains respect and 
eventually has them switch over. The federal bank and economic policys he keeps. 

    Marbury v Madison, 1803
The judiciary act of 1801
The federalists no longer dominated congress, so they pass at last minute. they want to 
control some part of congress. It expands judiciary branch. Vancany not filled. Creates 16 
federal courts. All judges were federalists. 
Midnight appointments:

Williams marbury was supossed to get one of the justice of the peace positions. Marbury 
hasn’t got his comisson yet and adams is gone. Madsion (new secretary of state) is not 
going to give commsion to Marbury because he doesn’t 
agree with the law (WHAT LAW?) takes to court. The 
chief justice John Mashall. HE ends up ruling that the 
right thing to do is give Marbury his commison. Although 
is declared the whole law unconstitutional.

Significance: Judicial Review, sets a presisdent, supreme 
court has the power interprets constitution 

           Louisiana Purchase.
Background. Napolian sees land that spain holds and 
wants that piece of land so he can bring French empire 
back to America. Uses French island of Hatie as his spring board to move in to the 
territory. They sign a secret treaty where spain gives france this territory. Whenever 
napolian is ready, he can start expanding. HE can also use against Canada.  France is 
kicked out of hatie by the slaves there. He finds the land useless because he lost his 
“spring board”.  France needs money. In 1802 it is public that France owns area. Jefferson 
is in fear that France might cut off Mississippi to new orlands. So Jefferson sends people 
to France to get new orlands. Without Jefferson’s permissions they buy the whole 
territory for 15 million. Doubleing the United States. So they show up and are like “TJ.. 
uh we kinda bought the whole thing.” Jefferson is like..”hmmm, not that bad of a deal, 
but was I allowed to buy this land according to the constitution?.. oh well, what the heck, 
im signing”

Lewis and Clark Expedition
Jefferson wants to see what is in the area, and find a route to the pacific. When Louisiana 
is bought, he sends em out. His goals are: 
­see whats there: animals, soil, plants.
­he wants them to begin making good relations with the Indian tribes. Trade and peace
­hopes to find water route to pacific for trade with asia.
They do establish good relations. Don’t find a river. but They find a way through the 
rocky mountains. The accomplish the opening of the west. 

  Death of Alexander Hamilton
Jefferson is angry with Burr and Burr is angry 
with Hamilton. Burr is bitter. Federalists are

running mate again. So Burr knows he has to 
take another route. So he runs for government

about Burr and makes sure he doesn’t win. 
Burr is pissed and blames Hamilton of ruining 
his career. Hamilton says something not public about Burr, and Burr approaches 
Hamilton to defend his honor. So he challenges him to a duel. It is not uncommon. Often 
times they would show up and settle their problems there without shooting at each other. 
Hamilton even wrote about the stupidity of dueling. Hamilton feels he should go. 
Hamilton writes the day before that he will shoot into the air and assumes Burr will too. 
Burr is not brought to justice but the people endite him. Burr is still vice president at the 
time
