Whats in a Name? Backyard Flyer
becomes Electric Flight!
Its ofcial: Backyard Flyer, the premiere magazine for smaller
RC planes (and sister publication to Model Airplane News), has
changed its name to Electric Flight with its January 2011 issue.
Since Backyard Flyers launch in 2002, weve seen tremendous
advancements that have allowed larger, more powerful (and
faster!) planes and helicopters to be powered by clean, quiet and
convenient E-power. The new title, Electric Flight, emphasizes
that the magazine now covers the entire spectrum of electric
aircraft, from indoor micro yers to 3D helicopters and super-fast
jets and allows us to better serve our growing readership.
Upcoming issues will cover small indoor and park yers as well
as larger electric aircraft that are taking advantage of the new electric technology. The
inaugural issue of Electric Flight will be on newsstands and at hobby stores everywhere
on October 26, 2010.
For subscription information, visit the AirAgeStore.com.
Secret Building Projects
To hear talk at the ying eld, someone who doesnt know better
might just think that the convenience and quality of todays ARF
aircraft have put an end to kit- and scratch-building. But Ill let you
in on a secret: a surprising high percentage of those pilots who
are enjoying and ying the latest new ARF have a building project on the side. It
might take a little longer to nish a scratch-built plane these days (its just too tempting
to assemble another ARF on the weekend!), but its slowly taking shape, piece by piece.
This month, were excited to feature a unique building review: a group project build
from the Scale Squadron of Southern California. We had an Alien Aircraft Cessna kit
looking for a qualied reviewer and the club was in the market for a communal project:
a match made in heaven! The club nished the build in record time and enjoyed the
process so much that were getting them a bigger project to build and review. I hope you
enjoy their article; you may even consider a group build for your clubs next project!
I hope this issues special plans guidewhich features 150 of the best Model Air-
plane News plans ever published!renews your interest in that half-nished plane
thats sitting off to the side of your workbench. And if you dont already have a project
in the works, check out our top 15 recommended building projects in the front of the
guide. Like our other plans, each comes with an online construction article with photos
and building details, but these 15 special projects have gotten exceptional feedback and
are guaranteed to be an enjoyable build. So, with this rst issue of 2011, lets toast to
sandpaper and glue and the knowledge that it isnt how many planes you build in your
life that counts, its the life in the planes you build.

Soar Like a Pro
Radian Pro
Designed with experienced sailplane pilots in mind, the new Bind-N-Fly
Radian Pro comes equipped with a 6-channel DSM2 receiver, ailerons
and functioning flaps. This advanced control setup makes it possible
to core out a thermal with even greater precision and take advantage
of mixing functions like reflex, camber and crow. But dont think you
need to have a fancy radio to fly it. A Y-harness is included so you can
enjoy basic five channel control with flaps using nothing more than a
Spektrum DX5e sport radio.

December 2010 issue. I was not able to
attend this years jamboree in Muncie, IN,
but your timely coverage was the next best
thing to being there. I have been ying
helicopters for more than 10 years and the
IRCHA show is a must-attend event for any
heli gear head. Thanks for being there!
Melvin Rosenberg, Chicago, IL
Melvin, were glad we were able to supply
you with your IRCHA heli x. We were
pleased that our own Rotor Speed col-
umnist and helicopter guru, Paul Tradelius,
was up for the mission! He was all over the
ightline and deep in the vendors row
looking for news and excitement and he
even had the energy to check out the after-
dark action at the AMAs huge ight facil-
ity. With over 950 registered pilots, this
jamboree has to be one of the biggest event
in the country, if not the world. From the
wild 3D aerobatic machines to the awe-
some turbine-powered scale job and every-
thing in between, this event continues to
be the place to be if you want to see the
latest the helicopter hobby and industry
has to offer. You can also see some of Pauls

SMALLER SMOKE
U
I was delighted to read the article on
smoke systems in John Glezellis Lets Talk

rig smoke systems for giant-scale planes is
really enlightening. However, what about
smaller scales? Lets face it; not everyone

WONDROUS WACO
U
Your Scale special issue (December
2010) was just killer and I instantly fell
in love with Mitch Epsteins giant-scale
WACO YMF-5 biplane. His review of the
AMR builders kit is a great example that
ARFs are not taking over the world! I dont
have anything against ARFs except that
there seems to be less and less kit-built
planes at the ying elds these days. Yes,
I am an old cranky scale builder from way
back, but I just had to comment on how
great your magazine is and that the cover
photograph showing Mitchs WACO with
the engine cowl removed was very striking!
Keep up the good work and tell Mitch he
has a plane he can be proud of! I hope to
see him compete next year at Top Gun.
Marshall Grossman, Phoenix, AZ
Marshall, Mitch is a very talented builder
for sure and his 33% WACO is just lled
with little details everywhere you look. Far
from being a hangar queen, his biplane is
own at several events and y-in meets
throughout the year. Recently, Mitch just
won Best of Show at both the Old Rhine-
beck RC Jamboree in Rhinebeck, NY, and
at the Central CT RC Clubs ninth annual
Big Biplane Bash! His monster RCS/Moki
215cc 7-cylinder radial engine also adds to
the models realism and produces amazing
amounts of smoke.

I heard through the RC grapevine that
one of my favorite magazines is coming to
an end! Is this true? Is Backyard Flyer maga-

is a mistake and you should reconsider!

Tommy Alvarez, email
Tommy, no, no, no! Take a deep breath!
Backyard Flyer is coming to an end but in
name only! Starting with our January 2011
issue, we will be publishing the same great
electric content under a new name: Electric
Flight. Same time, same channel, just with
the new title. We will continue to cover
the smaller, less expensive backyard fyer
and foamie planes that have helped this
segment grow and mature, but we will also
be including bigger, more powerful electric
models including big 3D aerobats and elec-
tric ducted fan jets. Our sister publication
has been there reporting and highlighting
the E-environment from the start and it
will continue to do so with its new look
and title!

on the planet has either the means to buy,
build, fy, or even transport a giant-scale
model. Most of us prefer 40- or 60-size
planes. Why not give some insight on pos-
sible smoke setups for this more common
airplane sizes?
Armando Gama, Mexico City.
Armondo, thanks for the words of encour-
agement! Smoke is a big part of giant-scale
aerobatics and it can add a lot of fun to
everyday RC as well. For a step-by-step arti-
cle on how to make your own smoke muf-
fer and install the required pumping hard-
ware, check out my article in the December
2010 issue of Model Airplane News. Though
the How To article is focused on a
-scale Cub with a 20cc gas engine, the
same basics can be applied to a smaller-size
RC model. A 40- to 60-size airplane is a bit
small, however, as the additional weight of
the smoke pump and smoke oil tank may
increase the wing-loading too much and
it also might be hard to ft into the space
available. A 120-size plane like a WACO
biplane or even an Extra or Edge would do
very nicely. A .60-size Cub would handle
the additional hardware quite nicely. It has
a roomy cabin area to accommodate every-
thing. Also, the same technique used to
convert the gas engine muffer would also
work with a glow engine muffer (three
holes, some JB Weld, and the preheat sec-
tion of the injection tube going through
and back into the muffer) just be sure to
really degrease the muffer before sealing it
up with the metal epoxy. Good luck!

Useful hints from modelers
SURFACE HEIGHT GAUGE
This surface height gauge is perfect for checking your models
alignment especially when comparing the wing and stabilizer
alignment to each other. Use a brass tube and a sharp wire in
a ip-up bottle cap. You can leave the cap on the bottle to use
on larger models, just ll it with sand for stability. This setup is
more convenient to use if the wire is bent as shown. Solder on an
alligator clip to make a helping hand if needed.

EASY THIRD HAND
You can make a very useful third
hand by just soldering together a
wire coat hanger and an alligator
clip. Try making two holders bent
at a 45-degree angle, maybe some
with the jaws led off and balsa
or foam pads glued to them.
They can be custom made
for any need and useful
for soldering small
pieces of wire,
setting up
assemblies
and holding
tricky glue jobs.

GET THE EDGE
Have you ever tried to separate the backing off some covering lm
and found it almost impossible to nd an edge? Heres a way to
separate difcult covering lm from the backing sheet. Attach a strip
of masking tape to each side and create a handle on which to pull.
Youll nd that sheet is much easier to peel apart now. If they dont,
just re-stick the tape down with extra pressure, and try again.
Ken McSpadden, Chino, CA
MAKING THE RIGHT CONNECTION
Who doesnt have a plane with loads of wires running all over?
Need a simple and easy way to put some identication on those
plugs? Here is a simple way to do it! First, print some letters on self-
adhesive labels. Next, punch them out with any type of ofce punch
and stick it onto the plug. Be sure to stick the same letter onto the
matching plug that it needs to go into. Try using color labels, so you
can add color-coding to the mix.

Airtronics sD-6G
Interview with Mike Greenshields
We always enjoy the time we get with the people behind the scenes
who help to create these great products we use every day in our hobby.
One such person is Mike Greenshields, vice president of product
development and marketing for Airtronics. Here is what he had to say
about the new SD-6G Airtronics radio.
Was there a specifc market or group of people you designed this radio for? Or, is
it just to have a cool 6-channel radio in the lineup?
Of course, its cool! But we did have modelers in mind, mainly the sport pilots. This
radio is designed to fy just about every sport aircraft up to 6 channels and all of the
6-channel nitro and electric helicopters. Park pilots, sport fyers and heli fyers can
all use the radio.
Was there a specifc programming function you put into
this radio that has not been seen before?
Our menu is set up similar to our SD-10G, so even though
its a 6-channel, you start by entering a basic template
(number of aileron servos, elevator servos, servo positions
on the swash, etc.) and then it will automatically set up
the related and appropriate mixes. Most 6 channels do
not have this. In the helicopter menu we added many
detail functions such as servo and function EPA (to handle
swash-leveling) and throttle trim on/off for the aerobatic
fight mode. We wanted a 6-channel heli radio with enough
functions even for very advanced heli pilots.
Why did you use the 6 AA rechargeable batteries in the
transmitter rather than the larger Ni-Cd found in most
radios?
Internationally, its easier. There are many countries where
the packs are diffcult, non-standard, etc. The option for
AA Alkaline use means that a battery can be found for it in
any city on the planet.
The programming is very intuitive and easy to navigate,
is this type of programming something we will be seeing
on future Airtronics products?
All of the SD series radios are based on this menu
structure. We developed it with the help of our team
pilots and well continue using it because our customers
continually tell us how easy the SD radios are to program.
Are there upgrades available for this radio? Such as different control sticks or
battery packs?
Because it uses standard-size batteries and stick threads, most aftermarket stick
ends typically ft. If youre looking for an aftermarket battery, I highly recommend
Sanyo Eneloops. The stock batteries give lots of fight time, but these Eneloops
provide voltage retention during storage that rivals LiPos without the expense or
hassle or need for a special charger.
Can you tell us what is in the works or on the drawing board for Airtronics?
Were about to announce more receivers. Specifcally, for the SD-6G, there is a
new 3-gram indoor micro 4-channel receiver coming soon! Airtronics has released
a mountain of new products over the last two years, and I expect that trend to
continue.
Is there anything else you would like to say about the radio?
Take a look at the features list. From three fight modes even in aircraft mode to
vast mixing capabilities to the advanced heli-swash functions, the SD-6G has
programming well ahead our competition. Other radios in this category and price
range simply do not have the programming this radio offers. Oh, and we have a great
selection of affordable receivers
Another function that is worth explor-
ing is available on many of the program-
ming mixes and it allows you to apply
the same parameters from the menu you
are working in to all the fight modes, or
you can have different parameters for each
fight mode. This is set in the upper bar on
the programming screen. There are two
words that can be changed for the fight
mode, and the frst word is common
which applies the setting on that screen
to all three fight modes. The second word
is separate, which allows you to set dif-
ferent settings on that screen to the dif-
ferent fight modes. This is accomplished
by fipping the appropriate fight mode
toggle switch and entering the setting you
want for that mode. This programming
feature alone really makes the SD-6G very
versatile.
The VerdicT
No matter how you look at it, the Airtron-
ics SD-6G is a great value, packing in so
many features at a price point just under
$200. If youre looking for your frst radio
or just a radio to use for all those fun
planes you have in the hangar, then this is
an excellent setup for that. Even high-end
aircraft can beneft from the SD-6G as long
as you dont need more than 6 channels.
The SD-6G is well worth a look from you,
check it out!
Here is Mike
Greenshields, vice
president of product
development and
the Marketing/
Advertising
department, proudly
holding the new SD-
6G radio.

HobbyZones Super Cub LP BNF and RTF
You only get one frst fight and with the HobbyZone
Super Cub LP you can bet it will be a great one. HobbyZones exclusive
Anti-Crash Technology
(ACT) helps make sure of that. ACT constantly analyzes the Super Cub LPs in-fight attitude and
actively prevents turns or dives that might be too steep and lead to a loss of control. In fact, ACT makes learning to fy so easy
you could teach yourself.
Now you have two ways to experience the Super Cubs ACT
advantage - with the original ready-to-fy version or the new
Bind-N-Fly version. The ready-to-fy version includes every-
thing you need to get fying, including an FM transmitter. The
Bind-N-Fly version allows you to fy with a full range Spektrum
2.4GHz DSM transmitter (sold separately) that can grow with
you as you progress to more advanced RC planes. Both can
be fying in the time it takes to charge a battery pack and let
you add exciting options like foats and
X-Port accessories later on.

Twin-engine aircrafT are fascinaTing.
Maybe its the challenge of two engines,
the unique twin-sound, the horsepower,
or simply the wow factor. whatever the
reason, twins are cool. Today, the reliability
of electric power allows just about anyone
to fy a twin aircraft hassle-free.
new to the hobby is this spectacular
park fyer-sized, lightweight wood kit of the
famous cessna 310 twin from alien aircraft.
This easy-to-assemble kit uses twin electric
motors and can be fown with a simple
4-channel radio.
The cessna 310 has many variants since
release in 1954. alien aircraft chose the
early B version with the square tail. The
310B saw fame from the 1950s television
show, Sky King and his 310B named Songbird.
in the military, the 310B was nicknamed the
Blue-Canoe for its white and blue color paint
scheme. The air force and army used the
cessna 310B for everything from carting
around generals to chasing U-2 spy planes.
The kit is all-wood laser-cut with inter-
locking parts featuring stringers to make
the complex shapes of the fuselage easy and
light. included are full-size plans as well as
clear windows and fxed wire landing gear.
The manual is not included but is instead
about to be downloaded for free from alien
aircrafts website (alienaircraft.com). inter-
mediate builders and pilots will have little
trouble completing and fying this beautiful
scale model.

FLIGHTTEST
We ew our Cessna from both a hard-dirt and asphalt runway. All takeoffs were
R.O.G., with success on every ighteven though it was a little daunting with no
steerable nose gear. If ying from grass, we recommend hand-launch and soft belly
landing with the gear wires removed. Overall, we found ying the Cessna 310B to be
a complete success.
GENERAL FLIGHT CHARACTERSITICS
Stability and Tracking: In gusty wind, our little 24-ounce park yer Cessna did
need added throttle and speed, but could y through it easily. Tracking could have
been improved with more dihedral. However, we still found the plane overall easy to
y. These small shortcomings were easy to overcome, and we had no trouble ying
the plane even at very slow speeds.
Stalls: When we did stall, it was only because we did it on purpose and in each
attempt, the stall was slow, steady, and did not result in violent wing drops.
Aerobatics: The Cessna will do a stall turn, loop, y inverted and spin. All can be
performed to look very scale or to look like a fun little model airplane. The Cessna
310B is not an aerobat, but basic aerobatics are no problem and did not result in any
structural stress.
Glide: The Cessna 310B is very scale in this regard. There is a lot of drag due
to the big nacelles and gliding is not very effective. Its much better to keep a
minimum of quarter throttle on when ying even on approach for landing. Dont cut
throttle completely, especially if theres any head-wind, until just before aring for
touchdown.
PILOT DEBRIEFING
The 24-ounce Cessna 310B is certainly a park yer that ies well under 60mph. This
small-scale aircraft has full-size looks and style in a plane that will easily y at any
appropriate model airplane eld. Its easy to y for a moderately experienced pilot
and ies similar to most park-yers, with the only exception being power on landing.
Due to the extra weight and drag found on any scale plane, even this small Cessna
requires a little added power during descent and landing. Youll have fun with this
everywhere you goour club members certainly have!

adapters, motor wire extensions, and bat-
tery Y-harness (the twin motors and speed
controls use one central battery). Even if
you choose the basic kit, following their
recommended parts listing will ensure
youve chosen the right parts for success.
The ight controls are simple ailerons,
elevator, rudder, and throttle. The ailerons
each require an 8-10 gram servo thus
requiring a radio that can mix two aile-
ron servos or a Y-harness. We chose Cirrus
CS-301 servos. For radio control, were
using the new Airtronics 2.4GHz SD-5G
computer radio. For the ight battery, we
chose an affordable 3S 11.1V 1400mAh
LiPo battery from Hobby People.
BUILD NOTES:
A plane like this doesnt need a construc-
tion article. The parts interlock, the instruc-
tion manual and plans are very clear and
easy to understand, and the assembly steps
are in a logical order. They even explain

exactly how and where to cut, sand, and
shape all of the parts. Building the airframe
was an pleasant experience. We used popu-
lar Zap and Zap-a-Gap (zapglue.com) for
most of the assembly. However, as with any
wood kit, theres more than one way to go
about assembly. We have a few suggestions
for the rst-time 310B owner:
The parts are not identied and must be
compared to the drawings in the manual.
Take the time to do this!
There is quite a bit of carving and shap-
ing. The use of a Master Airscrew (mas
terairscrew.com) or similar razor plane
makes quick work of it.
The nose gear is xed. At many elds, this
is not much of an issue as long as you
complete a few taxi runs to ensure the air-
plane tracks straight. Once moving, the
rudder is effective for tracking.
Battery installation: We added a small
plywood plate and Velcro to assist in
holding the battery in place. It was easy
and there was plenty of room.
After 20 ights by several of the pilots
involved with the project, weve con-
cluded the plane could have used slightly
more dihedral. The plane ies great, but
tracking would have been enhanced
with dihedral that more mimicked the
full size, which has about twice as much
dihedral as the model.
CONCLUSION
The Alien Aircraft deluxe kit provides a qual-
ity and enjoyable model that is rewarding to
build and y. The Cessna 310B project only
took about 35 hours total. Airframe assem-
bly was easy due to the innovative design
and quality parts. The manual was clear and
concise with good power and hardware rec-
ommendations. At 42 inches in span, this
is a small park-yer model with huge curb
appeal. Be the rst one at your eld with a
high-performance Cessna 310!
FLIGHTTEST
ALIEN AIRCRAFT CESSNA 310B
The Cessna looks great
on the tarmac, ready for
another ight.
The Cessna 310B is a lightweight balsa airframe utilizing
standard former/stringer design to accomplish the complication
Cessna fuselage shape. Nose and tip tanks are made from
layering laser cut pieces together to make a block. Then the
builder nishes shaping and sanding.
We wanted spinners on our plane to enhance the scale
appearance. The hardware supplied did not make provisions
for a spinner. For our model, we used the spinner and adapter
from the Phase 3 Mini Spitre. The spinner shape was great,
the adapter t perfectly, and it gave us a nishing-touch to an
otherwise very cute airplane. The only drawback is that the GWS
prop hub is a little thick for the adapter and spinner, thus we
had to shave them down a little.

Nearly all aerobatic maneuvers involve
some segment(s) of inverted fight, so to
keep progressing, you need to develop
profciency with inverted fight. To start,
lets do away with the often repeated refer-
ence to the elevator being reversed when
the plane is upside-down. It is that kind
of thinking that causes people to become
confused and second-guess themselves,
or worse! A much simpler and more effec-
tive approach is to remember that you
will always push forward-elevator during
inverted fight. If the plane descends, push
harder (you are not pushing enough).
When it climbs, push less (you are pushing
too much). The ailerons, of course, work
the same whether upright or inverted.
Learning to fy inverted is also easier if
you throttle back to a more moderate air-
speed. Not only will you have more time to
think, but a lower airspeed also will require
you to push more forward-elevator to hold
the plane level and thus provide a greater
range of feel for the elevator. Its also smart
to enter the frst few attempts from a slight

climb to reduce your initial anxiety. As
your confdence and technique improve,
you can gradually increase throttle to start
achieving the airspeeds needed for aerobat-
ics, and the climbing entry can be gradu-
ally eliminated.
The next most important step is to
develop the habit of recovering from
inverted by rolling upright with the aile-
ron, especially if you become confused.
In fact, rolling upright should be your
response anytime you are not comfortable.
In the event that you become confused, it
is usually best to input aileron in whatever
direction you prefer and thus more quickly
upright the airplane than you would if you
contemplate which way to roll and then
act. Developing the habit of recovering
from inverted with aileron becomes rou-
tine very quickly simply by repeating the
exercise of rolling inverted for two or three
seconds and then rolling back to upright.
Another crucial element during your ini-
tial inverted practice is making sure that
the
1
2 roll to inverted is completed with
the wings perfectly level before you start
to push, because pushing with the wings
banked will initiate an unintentional turn
that will almost certainly lead to some
confusion.
I have stressed the importance of main-
taining consistent parallel lines with the
runway during aerobatics again and again
in previous articles, and so I wont repeat
it here. Let it just be said that the major-
ity of the problems that people experience
when learning aerobatics would be solved
more quicklyor plain disappear!if more
emphasis was placed on better position-
ing! Good positioning is the reason why
the good guys make it look easy and it
is what is required to be successful at the

advanced level. Thus, it is wise to take the
time to cement a foundation of consis-
tently fying straight lines back and forth
parallel with the runway before attempting
inverted fight.
Inverted turns
The forward-stick position that keeps the
plane level when inverted is essentially the
new neutral that other inputs will originate
from. When youre comfortable enough
to attempt an inverted turn, bank the
airplane while maintaining forward stick
pressure. Once the bank has been estab-
lished, push harder to initiate the turn and
adjust the amount youre pushing to keep
the turn level. Finally, roll out of the turn
while maintaining some forward-elevator
pressure.
OutsIde lOOps
When your plane is established on a paral-
lel line with its wings perfectly level and
with plenty of airspeed, the most critical
aspects of performing an outside loop are
set. All you have to do is push more eleva-
tor, hold it all the way around, and return
to the pre-loop elevator stick position at
the bottom to complete the loop.
If you arent too preoccupied, you should
reduce the throttle on the back side of the
loop to
1
2 or
1
4 to keep the airspeed from
becoming excessive. Note that many pilots
make the mistake of completely idling the
engine at the top of the loop, which causes
the airplane to start falling out of the loop
and/or stray off heading. Being the slowest
point, the top of the loop is the last place
that anyone should idle the engine. On the
other hand, loops tend to be more round
and track straighter if you wait until after
the airplane has gone over the top of the
loop to throttle back.
A typical outside loop will become
tighter or pinched on top as the air-
plane slows due to gravity, resulting in an
egg-shaped loop. If a clock were inserted
into the loop, you would see that the
pinch typically starts around 10:00 or
2:00, depending on the direction that the
loop is entered. These are the key points
where you will need to reduce the eleva-
tor and foat over the top to keep the
loop round. The standard technique used
to routinely perform round outside loops
consists of pushing a fxed amount of ele-
vator at the start of the loop. At the front
side key point, reduce the elevator input
Eliminate any confusion about which way to apply the
elevator when inverted by telling yourself that you will
always be pushing.
Recovery practice exercise: pitch up into a slight climb, roll inverted (wings level), push forward elevator for a few moments,
then roll upright. Repeat this exercise two or three times and rolling upright from inverted will become habit.
Inverted warmup: pitch up into a slight climb, complete a roll (wings level), start pushing.

slightly to foat over the top, then at the
back side key point, return the elevator to
its original position to match the back side
radius to the front side.
A common mistake is releasing too
much elevator, aka, hunting during the
foat portion and thus creating a fat spot
on top of the loop. This occurs for the
same reason people overcontrol at every
skill level: they want to see their inputs
doing something. Instead, concentrate on
smoothly reducing the elevator input to a
fxed position that is just enough to keep
the loop from pinching. When the foat
is performed correctly, the loop remains
round with no visible sign of when the
elevator adjustments were made. When
the loop is visible out of round, its usually
due to trying to manage the radius merely
by watching the airplane instead of paying
attention to the control inputs.
Having mastered the foat technique,
you may begin to notice that your out-
side loops tend to tighten or hook at
the bottom due to the increasing effective-
ness of the elevator as the airplane picks
up speed coming down. Hooking the
bottom of the loop is especially common
when looping into the wind and usu-
ally becomes noticeable during the last
1
8 of the loop. To keep the bottom of the
loop round, youll need to slightly reduce
your push as the airplane approaches the
bottom of the loop.
Basic inverted rolls
Performing a roll while inverted is the next
logical maneuver after learning the out-
side loop. All you need to do is push the
plane into a moderate climb, then hold in
aileron all the way around until inverted
again and resume pushing. Remember that
until you are comfortable with the basic
inverted roll (from a climbing start), the
control stick should pass through neutral
between the steps to avoid barreling the
roll. At frst, you may even want to pause
at neutral before applying aileron to make
sure that the elevator has been completely
neutralized and that the roll will remain
axial and on heading.
Horizontal inverted rolls
When youre comfortable with basic
inverted rolls, you are ready to add a
bump of up-elevator to keep the airplane
level through the upright portion of the
roll. Because the airplane is upright briefy
during the roll, the up-elevator input must
also be brief, i.e., a bump. Note: those
who attempt to base their up-elevator
input on watching the plane will often end

Rather than trying to get better at correcting deviations, profcient pilots enter
their loops with the wings level so that fewer adjustments are needed altogether.
A routine outside loop is thus not dependent upon good refexes, but is the result
of a wings-level entry to ensure the loop tracks vertical and does not corkscrew.
Once this essential has been mastered, adding roundness and other refnements
will be much easier.

A left-to-right loop
typically starts to pinch
around 2:00 as airspeed
decreases due to gravity.
Profcient pilots target key points during the loop to make smooth elevator
transitions before the loop goes out of round. Maintaining a round loop over the top
typically requires a slight elevator reduction to foat the top from 10:00 to 2:00.

just enough forward-elevator at the start of
the roll to keep the plane from dropping,
but this is otherwise undetectable. He then
pulls just enough up-elevator during the
upright portion of the roll to keep it level,
and then completes the roll with the wings
level while at the same returning to the
forward elevator required to maintain level
inverted fight.
Half roll from inverted
Since hundreds of precision aerobatic
maneuvers contain a
1
2 roll from inverted
to upright (Immelmann, half-Cuban,
etc.), it should receive some special men-
tion. The most common fault when roll-
ing upright from inverted is neglecting
to apply forward-elevator pressure while
initiating the roll. Many pilots will instead
try to keep the plane from dropping with
rudder, resulting in an awkward roll in
which theres a lot of tail movement often
accompanied by a heading change. A
much better result is achieved when the
pilot blends in a little forward pressure at
the start of the roll. Note that the eleva-
tor input at the start of the roll should be
just enough to maintain altitude or hold
a 45-degree line. A visible pitch change is
not the object. Again, if in doubt, input
less rather than more. Of course, all these
rules can be applied to the inverted portion
of your hesitation and slow rolls as well.
ConClusion
Advancing pilots often assume that any
diffculties they encounter can only be
overcome by learning more advanced
techniques and stick time. In truth, its
often just the opposite. The success of any
maneuver, even advanced ones, hinges
on good fundamentals, e.g., parallel lines,
wings level entries, consistent stick posi-
tions. The role of advanced techniques is
primarily to help refne maneuvers that are
already pretty good. If you struggle with
any of the techniques described here, you
can immediately turn things around by
refocusing on parallel lines and wings level
entries. In other words, practice can only
make perfect when youre building on a
solid foundation. Good luck!

assembled, there is a section on setup for
both novice and expert 3D iers, so the
X50B will perform just the way you want
it to from the very rst ight. It includes
throttle and pitch-curve data as well as
checklists and a troubleshooting chart.
Although all helicopters have the same
basic layout, its the attention to detail that
sets the really good ones apart from the
rest. And here is where the X50B shines,
with details like using light, yet very
strong, carbon side frames (only 30mm
wide for a very slim prole) with machined
metal stiffeners mounted below the clutch
and a carbon baseplate for extra support. A
metal clamp is also used on the tail boom
to keep it from slipping out of position.
Usually, there is not a lot to be said for
the landing gear, but yet here again atten-
tion to detail resulted in a hollow compos-
ite gear that is very strong yet very light.
And every ounce of weight that can be
saved just adds to the overall ight perfor-
mance. It seems that every effort has been
made to ght weight, including a vented
clutch bell, vented main and tail rotor
gear, a light tail boom bracket, carbon tail
n, and composite tail rotor gear case. A
belt-driven tail rotor is also used for high
efciency, low parts count and easy and
inexpensive replacement, again resulting
in more weight savings. The tail rotor itself
uses metal grips, which house dual radial
bearings and thrust bearings for slop free
and powerful control of the tail.
The 400cc main tank is soft mounted in
the frame and a 80cc header tank is stan-
dard, providing a steady stream of fuel to
the engine. A 10mm hardened main shaft
supports the all-metal, CNC-machined
head and swashplate. The head again uses
both radial and thrust bearings for both
precision and long life. The CCPM swash-
plate is controlled by three independent
servos, each using a push-pull control
system for precision, strength and added
reliability. The under-slung ybar reduces
the prole of the X50B, and the lightweight
3D paddles are locked in place with a grub
screw. There is also plenty of room on the
three-deck tray to hold all the electronics,
including my Futaba GY701 and its gover-
nor (futaba-rc.com) as well as the Switch-
Glo Pro onboard glow igniter (switchglo.
com) system. Also, note how all the wires
are securely held in place with tie wraps
and spiral wrap, which also adds a little
bling to the X50B. And last but not least,
I really like the very high-quality painted
berglass canopy that securely snaps
in place without bolts, screws, etc. The
canopy can quickly and easily be removed
between ights for inspection and preven-
tive maintenance.
CONCLUSION
From its high-quality parts to its excel-
lent design, the Titan X50B is capable of
taking you from basic ying through the
most demanding 3D maneuvers. High
strength and light weight, combined with
the Thunder Tiger power system, provides
the increased ight performance we are all
looking for and makes the X50B perform
like a much larger helicopter. Easy to see in
the air and easy to transport, the X50B is
the one helicopter you will want to take to
the eld every day.

Total Tail Control: Futaba Gy701 Gyro
Gyros have continued to improve throughout the years, and I was very lucky to have
the new Futaba GY701 gyro and governor combination just released as I was about
to start this project. The gyro itself is so small it almost gets lost on the helicopter.
However, it makes up for its small size in huge performance. Matched with a control
box thats easy to see and adjust and a BLS 251 ultra tail rotor servo, this is the
latest and greatest from Futaba. Although novice and intermediate iers can use
the Futaba GY701 in the rate mode for normal ying and gentle aerobatics, with the
ip of a switch the heading-hold mode is engaged, and this is specically designed
for precise control of the tail during 3D aerobatics. In this demanding ight mode,
the tail rotor moves precisely in an instant and then comes to a stop when needed.
Although Futaba continues to improve their gyros and servos, you have to wonder
just how many more improvements are left to me made!
The Futaba GY-701 gyro is so
small it almost gets lost among
the other electronics, and its
control box is bright and easy
to read and adjust. The
Duralite Li-Ion 2600mAh
EXB battery can be
quickly charged at
the ying eld to
keep you in the
air all day long.
The all-metal CNC-machined head, head
button and swashplate are a thing of
beauty. The blade grips are supported by
both radial and thrust bearings, while the
ybar control arms use double setscrews
to keep them in place under the most
demanding maneuvers. Note white paint
to designate the master blade grip.

The rule used to be bigger ies better. However, that was before
T.A.G.S. a Novus 125 exclusive. Most gyros stabilize only one axis:
T.A.G.S. stabilizes all three. Result: 400-size handling in a heli half the
size. Novus 125s not only go where you
point em; they hover virtually hands-
free. And if the wind tries to blow you
off course, T.A.G.S. shows it whos boss!
Its incredible dependability and even more handling help, all in one
great radio. Low rates mean gentler, smoother ying while youre
learning how. And once you know how, you dont pull out the tools.
You simply ip a switch and enjoy the added freedom and response
high rates offer.
Nano helis are limited to indoors. 250s are best suited for outdoors.
Novus 125s can do both. If its nice, you y outside. If its not, you
stay in and y anyway. The best of both worlds.
The Novus 125 FP (Fixed Pitch) heli has it all. The Novus 125 CP
does, too, plus a collective pitch head for all-out aerobatics.
Novus 125s handle like larger helis because theyre designed
and equipped like them. Theyre built on a true heli frame, with
real performance components: a brushless motor; a torque
tube-driven tail; high-performance digital micro servos; and,
a heading-hold gyro.

Lithium-Iron-Phosphate Batteries
Compare LiFeSource LiFe packs to NiCd or NiMH batteries and youll nd that
they last longer, weigh less, and provide more voltage and capacity for greater
power and longer run time all for about the same price.
Heres one example: Matched against a typical 6V 2000mAh NiMH pack, a
2-cell 2100mAh LiFeSource battery weighs 14% less, has 10% higher voltage
AND offers 5% greater capacity.
You also enjoy lower self-discharge rates and a higher, more constant voltage
across the entire discharge curve, plus more connector options on most packs.
LiFeSource...now the best battery option in R/C!

MH-35 & FHX
Force RTF
Micro Helis
Whats the story?
The new MH-35 and FHX Force RTF Micro
Helis are close relatives of the Blade mCX
heli distributed by Horizon Hobby and
are designed to give you an exciting air-
to-air combat experience. Straight out of
the box, these ultra-lightweight helis come
with built-in modules that, on command,
send out infrared signals (hits!) that are
range adjustable. Equipped with a gyro
stabilization system, the Force Helis are
responsive, yet rock steady, giving you
complete control.
The two-stick transmitter is similar to
other E-fite/ParkZone transmittersthe
right stick is for forward/aft, and left/right
cyclic control the left controls yaw and
throttle. The transmitter also has a mode
(1 or 2) select switch and digital trims. A
built-in LiPo charger is in the bottom left
of the transmitter. Located on the top, back
side of the transmitter are two fre buttons
to fre at your targets. Each helis infrared
(IR) module can both transmit and receive
IR signals to register hits.
The Visual Damage Assessment System
makes the helis spin when they receive IR
hits. Range can be set for within 10 feet

Gas Engines
All include an electronic ignition system, a
pumped carb, mount and muffler. Heli pilots have three versions of the championship-caliber
91HZ to choose from, including the rear-exhaust 91RZ-H
and the 91HZ-R with pumped regulator. The 37SZ-H
offers major power boosts for .30 and .50 helis.
Like all other heli engines, the 50SX-H Hyper and
55HZ-H Hyper include a glow plug and require a
header and muffler or tuned pipe. The GT55 offers
gas modelers 20-30% more power than the
competition. Its ID-01 electronic ignition system
is an O.S. exclusive. The 56FS-a and 81FS-a both
feature a lubrication system that eliminates the
need for crankcase ventilation, while AX Series
engines feature a Power Box
muffler.

Its ID-01 electronic ignition system
is an O.S. exclusive. The 56FS-a and 81FS-a both
feature a lubrication system that eliminates the
need for crankcase ventilation, while AX Series
engines feature a Power Box
muffler.

Fast Fixes for RC Engines
ENGINECLINIC
BY CLARENCE LEE
AS REGULAR FOLLOWERS of the Engine
Clinic column will probably know, the
January issue always marks a milestone
in the writing of this column. It was back
in 1969 that I was approached by a fellow
named Dick Sonheim, who was associ-
ated with R/C Modeler Magazine (RCM), to
write a question and answer column for
the magazine. It seems that the magazine
was getting a large number of letters and
phone calls from readers asking engine-
related questions that the RCM staff did
not feel qualied to answer. I kicked the
idea around for a while and decided to give
it a try. Thirty-six years and 432 columns
later, I was still writing Engine Clinic
when RCM closed their doors. This came
as quite a surprise to me as I had been told
that the magazine was up for sale and had
two prospective buyers, so I kept turning in
columns which resulted in several unpub-
lished columns. I had about decided to give
up the magazine writing business when I
got a phone call from Model Airplane News
executive editor Debra Cleghorn. Debra
made me an offer that was hard to refuse
so Engine Clinic could continue.
So, here we are ve more years later,
starting our 43rd year of column writing.
Hopefully, the good Lord willing, we will
be able to hang in there for a few more
years. However, as always, it is you, our
readers and your letters that keep this
column going. Keep the letters coming and
dont leave it up to the next guy.
Lets answer a few letters.
mixture needle. It may be screwed in too
far and not withdrawing from the fuel jet
far enough. If the problem still exists, it
could be the clunk in your fuel tank, i.e.,
the hole is too small. Drill it out to the
same inside diameter as your fuel tubing.
If using one of the sintered bronze clunks,
it may be clogged with congealed oil, so
replace it. The tank probably has an
1
8-inch
O.D. tubing outlet pipe. Replace this with
5
32-inch O.D. tubing. If using an in-line fuel
lter, try removing it. The inlet and outlet
holes may be too small or it is plugged with
foreign matter. Finally, the carburetor is
designed to be used with mufer pressure,
so be sure to use it and be sure nothing is
pinching the mufer pressure line. I would
appreciate hearing what you nd. When
it comes to break-in, engine size does
not matter. The engine should always be
broken in at full throttle so that it comes
up to operating temperature. Then the
SUPERTIGRE FUEL FLOW

I have a SuperTigre 2300 2-stroke
engine. Im running the engine on a
bench for tuning purposes with a Slim-
line Inverted Pitts mufer using large fuel
tubing and a standard fuel tank
with included hardware. I started
the engine using the factory car-
buretor settingsidle speed at 4

turns and high speed at 2 turns.
The engine ran great up to mid-throttle
where it dies. Then, I enriched the High
Speed Needle (HSN) one turn until the
engine ran with the carb full open, which
was about four turns. Now I have the HSN
seven to eight turns rich and theres no
change in rpm from mid throttle to full
throttle. Still, when I do the pinch test
the engine dies without running up in rpm,
meaning its still running lean. The only
thing I havent done yet is run fuel directly
from the fuel can to the engine. Why is the
engine not receiving enough fuel? Should
a large 2-stroke engine run and tune like a
small 2-stroke engine? Is it best to run the
engine at full throttle or idle for break-in?
The directions say full throttle.
Rob, Waupaca, WI
Rob, if you have to back the needle valve
on your S.T. 2300 out seven to eight turns,
something is obstructing the fuel ow.
Remove the needle valve and ush the car-
buretor with a fuel bulb and fuel. Foreign
matter may be clogging the fuel passage. If
this doesnt help, try backing out the idle
One-of-a-kind V-12
Seen at a recent Warbird meet at Mac Hodges ying eld in
Georgia, this beautiful 90cc V-12 is a one-of-a-kind engine by
Gerhard Ullmann. The weight of the engine is about 7 pounds.
Gerhard was running the engine with a 20x10 prop for break-in
but will install a 26x10 for ying. Note that only three carburetors
are utilized with each carburetor feeding four cylinders. The
engine was built in Germany over a period of six months in a
trade school by some soon-to-be machinists under the direction
of Gerhards brother-in-law, Christian Stoehr. The majority of the
parts were hand machined. Can you imagine this engine is a P-S1
or Spitre?
Picture and information submitted by Jerry Smith.

speed varied by richening and leaning the
mixture with the needle valve. Personally,
however, on the initial start up, I like to let
an engine run at about two-thirds throttle
for ve minutes or so before advancing to
full throttle. Excessive idling should be
avoided as it can cause a varnish build-up
that only delays the break-in.
AFTER-RUN PROCEDURE
U
I have an 0.S. 81FS and a 110FS with
the closed crankcaseno external vent
or nipple. What advice can you give me
for shutting down after each ying ses-
sion? It is not practical to remove the glow
plug each day to load in after-run oil. The
aluminum head and steel threads on the
glow plug are not a good combination to
remove/replace three or four times a week.
I run the engine full throttle and pull off
the fuel line. Then, with glow driver on, I
turn it over for several seconds with electric
starter to burn out as much as possible. I
use Wildcat 2- and 4-stroke fuel with 18%
synthetic oil. With each new gallon I add
6.6 ounces of Klotz Benol Castor to bring
total oil content to 22 percent. Despite this,
I have had rear-bearing failure on the 110.
Thank you for your help. Keep up the
Attention Zenoah
Engine Owners!
Do you have an aircraft design in mind that
utilizes a cowled engine arrangement in
which you would like to use your Zenoah
engine, but the carburetor sticking out the
side of the engine presents a mounting
problem? Who would want to cut a hole in
the cowl for the carburetor, especially on a
scale model? Well, Toni Clark has the answer
in the form of a 90-degree intake manifold
that mounts the carburetor facing rearward.
The carburetor manifolds, that Toni calls
The Bend, are available for the Zenoah
G-62, G-45, G-38, and G-26. Prices are
based on the European Euro and seems to
vary daily, so contact Toni for the exact U.S.
dollar price, which at the time of this writing
appears to be in the $50 to $60 range.
Toni is an Englishman who resides
in Germany and operates Toni Clark

good workI have enjoyed your column
since 1977!
Travis Holmes, email
Travis, your engine shut-down proce-
dure is ne. Unfortunately, this only gets
rid of the excess fuel in the combustion
chamber while still leaving some of the
acid by-product of combustion in the
crankcase. I checked with my O.S. con-
tact and he, in turn, checked with their
chief designer who said rust had not been
TIP OF THE MONTH | Removing Screws
A
month seldom goes by in which I dont receive an engine or two for stripped glow
plug or broken or stripped 4-stroke exhaust port repair that has a rounded-out
cap screw socket. The owner had to send the complete engine due to not being
able to remove the screws. It seems that sometimes the screws have been installed by
an assembly person with the strength of a gorilla. Quite often, Im asked how I go about
removing the screws, so heres how.
To remove head screws you will need access
to a drill press. The engine then needs to be
mounted on a wooden block that is, in turn, held
in a drill press vise clamped to the drill press
table. Rigid mounting is most important. So, do
not try to hold the engine by the mounting lugs
clamped in the vise jaws as this can allow it to
come loose or distort the case. Then, with a
carbide end mill slightly larger than the screws
thread diameter, and centered over the screw,
the screw head is milled away. The engine head
can then be removed and the remaining threaded
section unscrewed. Carbide end mills can be
had from any machinist supply. Two sources
that I frequently use are use enco.com (800-873-3626) who offer next-day delivery, and
ipstool.com (800-423-4981). To remove cylinder-base screws on engines that utilize one-
piece head and cylinder assemblies such as Saito, some O.S engines and others, go to
the local hardware or auto-parts store and purchase a pair of 4-inch vise grips. Adjust
the vise grip jaw tension so that it takes both hands to close the vise grips on the screw
head. You will only be able to turn the screw about an eighth turn, but this is enough to
break it loose. Applying localized heat to the case next to the screw with a propane torch
or tip of a large soldering iron will help break loose even the most stubborn screws.
If you are not familiar with vise
grips mentioned in the text,
heres what they look like.
Available in a number of sizes,
vise grips are useful for a variety
of applications where high
gripping power is required
something that ordinary pliers
cannot accomplish.

a problem with the closed system and
there was no need for after-run oil as long
as you spin the engine for 10 to 15 sec-
onds with an electric starter. However, as
you have found out, rust can be a prob-
lem. Removing the muffer and injecting a
heavy load of Marvel Mystery Oil or other
good penetrating oil through the exhaust
with the exhaust valve open while turning
the engine over will get some of the oil
into the lower end. But again, you have
the wearing of the threads problem. The
best solution, however, would be to drill
and tap the back cover for a vent ftting
through which the oil can be injected.
Then, plug the vent with a short length of
fuel line and a screw.
K&B SportSter 65
U
A while ago, I inherited a used K&B .61
engine, serial no. G29065. I mounted it
and when I ran it, it made a loud knocking
noise, but otherwise it ran very strongly.
The piston and cylinder are in excellent
condition, the rod bearings are tight (less
than 0.001-inch slop), but the crankshaft
has 0.030-inch end-play and 0.005-inch
side-play. The crankshaft shows no sign of
wear and measures 0.656-inch at all loca-
tions. The crankcase back shows some evi-
dence of contact with the crank pin, not
enough to justify the noise. Because of the
step in the shaft as it exits the housing, it is
impossible to shim for end-play. Also, the
crankshaft material that acts as the bearing
is only 0.110-inch thick and therefore, it
seems it would be diffcult to remove and
insert a sleeve bearing. Do you have any
suggestions or is a new crankcase the only
answer? Are they available and where?
Thanks for your column, its great.
Richard Moeller, Prunedale, CA
Richard, the engine you have inherited
is not a K&B 61, but a K&B Sportster 65.
These are entirely two different engines.
The K&B 61 has a single ring piston,
separate slip-in sleeve, and ball-bearing
supported crankshaft. The Sportster 65
does not use a separate sleeve, and uses a
chromed aluminum, ringless piston run-
ning directly in the cylinder with the
crankshaft also running directly in the
crankcase, i.e., no bronze bushing. Later
engines did have a bronze bushing in the
nose due to excessive wear in this area, as
your engine has experienced. I told John
Brodbeck Jr., that running the crankshaft
directly in case would not work, but he
felt that the aluminum used was superior
and would work. Guess who was right!?
The aluminum, incidentally, is the same
as used in the Chevrolet Vega engine
block. The noise you hear is probably the
crank slapping back and forth due to posi-
tive and negative pulses in the crankcase
in conjunction with excessive end play.
The old Fox 59 sleeve-bearing engines were
noted for this characteristic.
The only way to limit the end play is to
make a washer that slips over the counter-
balance end of the crankshaft. This will
move the crank rearward, so be sure the
crankpin does not rub on the back cover.
The slop in the nose can be cured with a
thin bronze bushing with about a 0.032-
inch wall. If going this route, let the bush-
ing extend out the nose of the case about
0.020-inch which will also solve the end
play problem and make a washer unnec-
essary. The only other alternative would
be a new crankcase available from K&B,
1630 South California Ave., Monrovia, CA
91016 (626)-359-9527. Good luck.

Finalapproach
By gERRy yARRISH
At the all-electric 2010 NEAT Fair, we ran
into someone who has fully embraced the
First Person View (FPV) concept as it
applies to RC aircraft. Gary Graf of Long
Island, NY, brought all his tools of the trade
including two RC aircraft to get his Eye in
the Sky window on the world below. Gary
is a full-fedged modeler who started at age
16 and fying RC at 18. We recently got a
chance to chat with him.
Gary, tell us the FPV experience.
Basically, FPV involves a small camera on
the nose of your aircraft that feeds video to
a small transmitter, which then sends the
V-signal to a ground station. The Ground
Stations consists of an antenna, receiver
and a video monitor or goggles. You fy
from the vantage point of the aircraft alone.
Is it hard to control the aircraft?
I started FPV fying in January 2008 and
found FPV was easier to learn than RC
fying. I prefer to use fying wings as my
main FPV platforms because theyre easy to
set up and are the most effcient airframes.
Tell us about your Octo-Copter
There was a steep learning curve with these
type of aircraft. Multi-rotor helicopters
consist of a control board for stability, a
main frame to support everything, speed
The Octo-Copter
The ultimate radio control FPV platform
controls and motors. They can have tri-,
quad-, hexa- and octo-confgurations. The
more motors you have, the greater the sta-
bility and payload capability. I use a UAVX
Flight Control board that has three gyros, a
barometeric altimeter, compass and a GPS
receiver. I did a lot of soldering and some
reprogramming on the more advanced sys-
tems. However, they make a great aerial
video platform because of their stability
and maneuverability.
The Octo-Copter, with its FPV setup, is
a great conversation starter. I always enjoy
answering questions and sharing the hobby
with people I meet at RC events. It has a
Position and Altitude Hold function as
well as a Return to Home function that
really lighten my piloting workload while
shooting aerial video photography.
