BRIEFINGS

1. INSTRUCTIONAL INTENT: The OCS student will apply the writing skills developed in
previous hours to speaking and will refine briefing skills.

2. TRAINING OBJECTIVES: As a result of this instruction, the student will accomplish the
following objectives:

a. ACTION: Identify the four types of military briefings.


CONDITION: Given this class.
STANDARD: Students will list three of four types of briefings

b. ACTION: Identify the steps in preparing a military briefing.


CONDITION: Given this class.
STANDARD: Students will correctly name the each of the three steps, in order, to
prepare a military briefing.

c. ACTION: List at least five general rules for giving effective oral presentations.
CONDITION: Given this class.
STANDARD: Students will correctly name at least five general rules for giving an
effective briefing.

d. ACTION: Discuss the practical application of mindmapping as it applies to military


briefings and writing.
CONDITION: Given this class.
STANDARD: Discuss the use of mindmapping as a technique for gathering notes for
briefings, effective reading/studying, note-taking, test-taking, and decision-making.

3. STUDENT REQUIREMENTS:

a. Advance assignment: NONE.

b. Required Reading: The student will familiarize themselves with FM 5-0, appendix B
prior to the class.

c. Supplemental Reading: NONE.

4. CENTRAL POINTS:
a. Many of the tools and techniques covered thus far in the Communicative Skills block of
instruction apply to briefings.

b. Effective briefings are dependent upon effective preparation, including complete analysis
of the mission, and practice.

c. Use mindmapping to maximize effectiveness in all communicative and study skills.
