Course Description: This course is designed to allow the learner to explore Algebra 1 concepts through the use of tabular, graphical, and function representation of mathematical phenomena. Through the use of online web tools, tutorials, and group discussions the learner will be introduced to all of the Michigan Standards for Algebra 1. By completing the course, the learner will have satisfied all standards for Algebra 1 as outlined by the State of Michigan. Resource Requirements: 1. Online access code to Pearson Prentice-Hall online textbook. 2. Wimba web-chats will be conducted, so students should have a working microphone to use. 3. Graphing calculator or use of an online graphing calculator. Textbook: The textbook you will be using for this course is the online textbook published by Prentice-Hall. This is the Michigan-standard aligned Algebra 1 Textbook, 2009 edition. The text includes online tutorials, quizzes, and review lessons the learner can use to completely master all concepts covered. There are also applets to help the student visually manipulate graphs, diagrams, and number lines to better help them understand algebraic concepts. All assignments will be from this textbook, so the leaner is encouraged to explore and get a thorough understanding of how it is laid out. Each member of the course will be given an online username and password to access the online book and all web tools it contains. Student-Learner Responsibilities: This course is not self-paced, and the student will be expected to keep up with assigned readings and assignments each week. Weekly assignments are due the Wednesday of each week, with a mandatory Wimba chat session on Monday of each

week. Assignments should be emailed to the instructor. Weekly quizzes must be taken by midnight of Sunday of the week, and the final exam must be completed by the final exam date. The course will require a minimum of 3 hours of your time each week. It is the responsibility of the learner to come to each Wimba session with questions from the upcoming weeks assignment, as well as actively participate in all discussions and chats. Plagiarism and copying will not be tolerated, and any student caught cheating on the quizzes or final exam will receive a failing grade for the course. Grading Policy and Weighting: Category Weekly Investigation Average Wimba Chat attendance Average Quiz Average Midterm Grade Final Exam Grade Grade A AB+ B BC+ C CD+ D DE Lessons: This course is comprised of 18 weeks, and therefore 18 lessons. Each lesson will cover approximately one week of class, with the final exam and midterm taking the place of the weekly quizzes for their assigned weeks. Below is the course outline.
